Job description:

Sheridan County Detention Center is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Detention Officer. This position requires shift rotation and working holidays and weekends. Candidates must meet the fitness standards of the WLEA at: https://www.wleacademy.com/fitness-standards. Candidates will also have to pass a psychological examination as well as an extensive background check.

MAJOR DUTIES:

· Ensures the security of the jail facility by performing internal and external security checks and by conducting cell searches.

· Conducts head counts; searches for and confiscates unauthorized items; administers discipline and privileges according to jail policy.

· Performs booking and release of inmates, including receiving, searching, photographing, fingerprinting, and completing bond paperwork.

· Issues clothing, linens, personal items and meals to inmates; dispenses medication as authorized.

· Supervises inmates engaged in cleaning duties.

· Transports inmates to medical appointments, court, and other correctional facilities.

· Coordinates the extradition of prisoners; arranges related transportation; processes related paperwork.

· Coordinates and participates in the maintenance of agency buildings and grounds as assigned; coordinates work with external contractors.

· Updates the oncoming shift of all matters of mutual concern from the preceding shift in the absence of a supervisor

· Attends hearings and testify in judicial proceedings.

· Collects, processes, and documents evidence as required.

· Prepares investigative and other reports, provides accompanying documentation and information to appropriate entity in a timely manner.

· Serves civil and criminal papers, including subpoenas, warrants, civil executions, and notices within the detention center.

· Maintains a level of fitness necessary to accomplish all required tasks or duties

· Maintains P.O.S.T. certification with continuing education; emphasis on required perishable skills training.

· Maintains technical and tactical proficiency in all weapons and equipment assigned.

· Adheres to professional and safe work practices; adheres to safe driving practices.

· Reviews incoming and outgoing paperwork.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

· Knowledge of criminal detention principles and practices.

· Knowledge of department booking procedures.

· Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws.

· Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.

· Knowledge of physical restraint techniques and equipment.

· Skill in interpersonal relations.

· Skill in the supervision of inmates.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sergeant - Detention assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include detention guidelines, department policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the provision of inmate security. The number of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the oversight of inmates. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency of detention center operations and to the safety of inmates and personnel.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, inmates, representatives of other departments, the general public, judges, lawyers, ministers, counselors, doctors, and probation and parole officers.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a corrections facility and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized equipment and protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification for the State of Wyoming.
