Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, a global Am Law 50 firm, is seeking a Manager of Lateral Conflicts.
The Manager of Lateral Conflicts is a member of Sheppard Mullin’s Office of the General Counsel and reports to the General Counsel. This role works with the Senior Assistant General Counsel and Manager of Conflicts and New Business Intake, and the lateral conflicts team. We are seeking a highly qualified candidate (with or without a J.D.) who has experience in lateral conflicts of interest and law firm operations.
The primary focus of the Manager of Lateral Conflicts is to oversee and coordinate all aspects of the lateral conflicts clearance process for all levels of lateral hiring. The successful candidate will be meticulous, intellectually curious, have good knowledge of conflict rules, effective people skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
The Manager of Lateral Conflicts must be able to expertly analyze and resolve conflicts of interest in the lateral context. They must also be able to effectively communicate and manage high volume workflow.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Manager of Lateral Conflicts will supervise analysts and specialists on the lateral team, including participating in staffing, hiring and personnel management.
Qualifications And Experience
Required Qualifications: 4 years of legal ethics or law firm and conflicts analysis or conflicts attorney experience required. Be meticulous, intellectually curious, have good knowledge of conflict rules, effective people skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior management or supervisor experience.
Education
Required: Bachelors
Preferred: JD or Masters degree
Computer/Software Knowledge
Required: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred: Elegrity, Intapp or similar conflicts database,
Work Environment
Up to 10%.

Responsibilities
- Manage the lateral conflicts clearance process, including assigning candidates for searching and clearance, prioritizing competing deadlines with legal recruiting and firm management, and ensuring the accurate and timely completion of lateral conflict clearance.
- Support lateral conflicts analysts and specialists; oversee training, workflow, and quality control.
- Communicate with partners and lateral candidates to support clearance of potential lateral conflicts.
- Ensure adequate staffing and mange workflow volumes; participate in interviewing and onboarding new team members as necessary.
- Identify opportunities to streamline procedures and enhance efficiency, and lead process improvement projects through to completion.
- Collaborate with the Senior Assistant General Counsel, Manager of Conflicts and New Business Intake, the General Counsel, and other Office of the General Counsel (OGC) team members.
- Support firm-wide initiatives and special projects related to lateral integration and risk management.
- Review, analyze, and resolve conflicts of interest related to lateral candidates’ former and portable matters.
- Ensure compliance with the relevant rules of professional conduct.
- Communicate with recruiting, firm management, and lateral hires regarding conflicts issues that require resolution.
- Serve as a key point of contact for technology development support for associated applications.
- Act as a resource for Conflict Analysts and Specialists by assisting with their training and professional development, answering questions about lateral clearance, and resolving escalated clearance matters.
- Demonstrate the ability to multitask effectively and manage multiple lateral clearance processes simultaneously

- You will be based in one of our local Sheppard Mullin offices but will be allowed to work from home.
- You are required to come into the office on an as-needed basis.
- After hours and weekend work will be required on occasion as the workload requires.
