Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Theatrical Consultant with 3 to 10 years of relevant experience to join our Denver, Colorado office.

We are looking for a Theatre Consultant to join our team and provide expert guidance in the planning, design, and implementation of performance spaces. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of theatre architecture, performance lighting, rigging, and general stage engineering. Knowledge of acoustics and audiovisual systems is considered advantageous.

As a Theatre Consultant, you will collaborate with architects, engineers, and clients to ensure that performance venues meet the highest standards of functionality, safety, and artistic expression. The role requires a strong background in theatre production and technical systems, as well as the ability to translate artistic and operational needs into practical design solutions.

Your expertise will help shape spaces that inspire creativity and deliver exceptional audience experiences. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about the performing arts and has a strong technical foundation.

SM&W follows a hybrid work policy. This role requires on-site presence in the Denver office or at a project site for three days each week, with the option to work remotely for two days.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will be involved in all phases of a project, from initial concept development through construction and final commissioning.
  • Manage all aspects of your assigned projects and work closely with the project team from beginning to end, focusing on budget, scheduling, design, client and consultant communication, and coordination.
  • Develop technical specifications for rigging, drapery, performance lighting, and related stage engineering.
  • Evaluate site conditions and provide feasibility assessments.
  • Review and comment on architectural and engineering drawings
  • Coordinate with clients to understand artistic and operational needs
  • Ensure compliance with safety codes, building codes and industry standards
  • Oversee installation and commissioning of theatre systems
  • Provide guidance on seating, exiting and audience sightlines
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices
  • Conduct site visits and inspections during construction phases
  • Willingness to travel for site visits and meetings.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Design, Engineering, architecture, physics, audio technology, or a similar degree.
  • Five years’ experience in theatre consulting or technical theatre
  • Strong knowledge of stage mechanics, lighting, and rigging.
  • Familiarity with building codes and safety regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated experience in developing relationships with staff and clients.
  • Client focus, with a commitment to quality and problem-solving.
  • You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Formal training or on-the-job familiarity with technical drawing by hand or in Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit or Vectorworks. SM&W produces construction drawings in Autodesk Revit. A candidate without direct experience of drawing in Revit will be considered but we expect a willingness to learn our drawing production process and standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite/Office 365
  • Project Management Certification is a plus.
  • ETPC Certification is a plus.

The salary range provided represents only one aspect of the overall employee compensation package. Individual compensation determinations are influenced by various factors, including experience, position level, skill sets, geographic location, and the need to maintain internal equity among peers within the organization. We acknowledge that the candidate selected may have either less experience or higher seniority than suggested in the job posting. In such cases, the revised salary range will be communicated to the candidate.
