Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent (On-site / Resident)
About Shelby Synagogue:
The Shelby Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish congregation and community space pioneering Jewish life on the Montana plains. Rooted in Torah and guided by traditional Halakha, our mission is to provide a permanent, warm, and welcoming spiritual home for local residents, regional visitors, and travelers in Toole County. We host regular Shabbat gatherings, celebrate the Jewish holidays, distribute our annual Jewish Art Calendar, and offer a dedicated space for meaningful spiritual growth in small-town America.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a permanent, resident Rabbi to establish deep roots in Shelby and serve as our full-time spiritual leader, educator, and community builder. The ideal candidate possesses classical rabbinic ordination (Semikhah), a deep love for Jewish learning, and a passion for outreach (Kiruv). This is a unique opportunity for a pioneering individual or rabbinic couple looking to make a lasting, foundational impact—anchoring traditional Orthodox life, leading prayers, and teaching Torah in a beautiful, close-knit rural setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Spiritual Leadership & Liturgy: Lead traditional prayer services for Shabbat, High Holy Days, and festivals; oversee all halakhic and ritual needs of the sanctuary and community.
- Torah Education: Design and teach engaging, accessible classes on the Parshah, Halakha, Talmud, and Jewish ethics tailored to varying levels of Jewish knowledge.
- Pastoral Care & Counseling: Provide consistent, compassionate spiritual guidance, life-cycle officiating, and local support to community members.
- Community Outreach & Kiruv: Cultivate an open-door, hospitable environment to welcome local seekers, tourists, and regional Jewish families.
- Synagogue Operations & Growth: Partner with community leadership to expand local programming, coordinate holiday events, and manage community meals.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Ordination: Traditional rabbinic ordination (Semikhah) from a recognized Orthodox rabbinical seminary or respected halakhic authority.
- Textual Expertise: Strong command of traditional Jewish texts, codes of Jewish law, and practical Halakha.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication skills with a warm, non-judgmental approach to community building and hospitality.
- Pioneering Spirit: A strong commitment to living full-time in rural Northern Montana and an enthusiasm for the distinct lifestyle and rewards of small-town community building
