Position Summary
Works under direct supervision of an assigned supervisor and is responsible for the security and maintenance of Shelby County Division of Corrections in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Pay Grade: 45H
Minimum Qualifications
100.00% - 1. Must have high school diploma or GED.
2. Minimum age 21 at the time of application.
3. Discharged under honorable conditions from armed forces, if applicable.
4. Must not have been convicted of, or plead guilty to, or entered plea of no contest to any felony charge, or any violation of federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substance.
5. Must attend and successfully complete a recruit corrections training academy.
6. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assists in maintaining security and order in accordance with established policies and procedures.
2. Assists in the admittance and release of prisoners.
3. Observes and reports the conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbance, escape, and introduction of contraband.
4. Mans observation post or relieves other personnel as required.
5. Controls the operation of security floors, i.e., sanitation, security, and maintenance.
6. Supervises movement of inmates and maintains control in areas of the prison.
7. Makes periodic unscheduled patrols of inmate quarters and performs count at specified and unspecified intervals.
8. Inspects inmate"s person and quarters for contraband.
9. Controls, restrains, and maintains disciplinary control over inmates.
10. Handles emergency situations according to policy and procedures.
11. Acquires and maintains working knowledge of radio, computer, and other electronic equipment.
12. Prepares and completes reports connected with responsibilities, such as progress reports, disciplinary, and accident reports.
13. Attends and successfully completes Annual In-Service Training.
14. Resists inmate attempts to manipulate, distract, or interfere with operations.
15. Resolves minor problems/conflicts before they escalate into major problems.
16. Follows appropriate procedures under extraordinary circumstances; remains calm to maintain security of the facility and safety of all personnel.
17. Performs security checks, routine shakedowns, and searches to ensure security.
18. Performs other related duties as required or directed. KSA's
KSAs - 1. Ability to observe and accurately record events.
2. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
3. Ability to use tact in problem situations.
4. Physical ability to perform assigned work tasks.
5. Knowledge of the civil and constitutional rights of inmates.
6. Ability to establish and maintain records.
7. Knowledge of security systems and their implementations.
8. Ability to display initiative, sound judgment, and positive approach.
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Special Requirements
1. Must be a U.S. citizen.
2. Must be able to function in a prison environment.
3. Must be able to work weekends and various shifts as required.
4. Must have a valid Tennessee driver"s license as of the date of the scheduled medical examination.
5. Must be of high moral character.
6. Must pass a physical examination.
7. Must successfully pass psychological and pre-employment tests, TB and drug screening.
8. Be willing and able to qualify and use chemical spray and perform CPR
9. Must attend and successfully complete basic training school to include physical and written tests.

The remaining $1,500 is to be paid after twelve (12) months of service.
