Sheboygan County is seeking a skilled and motivated Highway Foreman to lead daily roadway construction and maintenance operations for the Grading Crew. In this hands-on leadership role, you’ll work alongside your crew while guiding projects from planning through completion—ensuring quality work, safety, and efficiency every step of the way.

- Lead, supervise, and work side-by-side with grading crew members on roadway construction and maintenance projects
- Plan and coordinate daily work activities to keep projects on schedule and running smoothly
- Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members, including participating in annual performance reviews
- Collaborate with Highway Supervisors and participate in management meetings
- Interpret construction plans, specifications, and Wisconsin DOT standards to guide project execution
- Use surveying tools such as GPS, transits, and levels to ensure accurate grading and layout
- Apply your knowledge of grading, excavation, compaction, and paving techniques in the field
- Oversee and perform key roadway operations, including:
- Excavation and base preparation
- Grade staking and compaction
- Catch basin, manhole, and valve adjustments
- Bituminous paving, seal coating, and shouldering
- Support project planning by assisting with cost estimates and documentation
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and project details
- Lead by example in maintaining a safe work environment, following:
- Wisconsin DOT safety requirements
- Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
- Work zone safety practices
- Perform winter maintenance duties, including:
- Snow plowing and ice control (salting/sanding)
- Snow fence installation, repair, and removal
- Operating trucks and heavy equipment as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 4 years of experience in roadway grading and construction (or equivalent combination of training and experience)
- Valid CDL A & Tanker (N) Endorsement
- Strong understanding of construction practices, safety standards, and equipment operation
- Ability to read plans, perform basic math calculations, and follow written and verbal instructions
- Leadership skills with the ability to guide, motivate, and support a crew
This is an active, hands-on role working both indoors and outdoors in a variety of conditions, including construction sites and highway environments. The position requires:
- Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting up to 100 pounds
- Physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and operating equipment
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and humidity
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Operation of trucks, snow removal equipment, and construction machinery
