Description:
Shift Schedules and Coverage: The core shift is Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, but during outages or peak demand, the team operates on two shifts with 12-hour coverage, sometimes ramping up to 24/7 operations.
Required Skills, Experience, and Training for Machinists:
Proficiency in core machining operations, preferred journeyman-level certification, and the training provided upon onboarding.
Core Machining Skills: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in manual machining tasks such as operating engine lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC equipment, as well as precision measurement using micrometers and calipers.
Certification and Experience: While journeyman-level apprenticeship certification is preferred, candidates with at least five years of relevant machining experience are considered; a minimum of high school education is required.
Technical and Computer Skills: Experience with CAD/CAM software and CNC programming is considered a plus but not a requirement; basic computer skills are not mandatory for the role.
Work Schedule, Overtime, and Flexibility Requirements:
The typical and peak work schedules, the need for flexibility during outage seasons, and the overtime expectations for machinists, addressing questions from multiple participants.
Standard and Peak Schedules: Outside of outage seasons, machinists work a standard day shift (6:00 AM to 2:30 PM), but during spring and fall outages, shifts may extend to 12 hours with 24/7 coverage, including night shifts from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Support maintenance machining work (not high-production machining).
- Handle major equipment overhauls and power generation outages, including:
- Disassembly, inspection, and manufacture of replacement parts.
- Reassembly and shipment back to plant sites.
- Perform general machine shop tasks and component repairs.
- Begin each shift with a safety briefing and work plan discussion.
- Work both independently and in small collaborative teams of 8–10 machinists.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong proficiency in core machining operations, including:
- Operating manual lathes, mills, grinders, and Bridgeport machines.
- Cutting threads, turning shafts, drilling, tapping, and machining keyways.
- Using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
- Ability to set up and indicate parts, work to ±0.001" tolerance.
- Capable of reading blueprints and performing self-directed tasks.
- Journeyman or apprenticeship-level machinists preferred.
- Equivalent experience (5–20 years) acceptable in place of certification.
- Helpful but not required:
- CNC machining and G-/M-code programming knowledge.
- CAD/CAM software experience (nice-to-have).
Equipment & Tools
- All tools and machines provided by Constellation.
- Company provides required computer access for web-based training.
- No need to bring personal tools or equipment.
Training Requirements
- 2–3 days of onboarding and safety training.
- Web-based and in-person modules covering:
- Safety, environmental, hand tools, and gas cylinder handling.
- Potential expansion to rigging and forklift operation qualifications.
- Proficiency with overhead bridge cranes is highly valued.
Industry Experience
- Power Generation experience preferred but not required.
- Successful machinists have also come from:
- Shipyards
- Steel manufacturing (e.g., Bethlehem Steel)
- Marine or heavy industrial backgrounds
- Core machining skills are transferable across industries.
