What are the responsibilities and job description for the Basic Skills Teacher Assistant position at Sewell School?
Our district is seeking a part-time Basic Skills Teacher Assistant for the 2026-27 school year. This position is for 5.95 hours per day at our Sewell School, which houses students in Preschool and Kindergarten.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
Works in conjunction with the classroom teacher to provide students who are identified to have deficiencies in either of the basic skills areas with as individually-tailored program to improve their communications and/or computation skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Basic Skills Teacher Assistant shall:
- Hold a New Jersey Certification as an Elementary School Teacher (preferred but not required)
- Have excellent leadership and organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
- Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
- Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the classroom teacher to plan and implement an instructional program commensurate to individuals needs in the areas of reading, language and/or math in a small group or large group setting.
- Identify students in need of remediation, including new registrants, in communications and/or computation skills using the district’s established criteria.
- Administer pre-and post-diagnostic tests.
- Assist the classroom teacher or Basic Skills Teacher with the preparation of progress reports and year-end evaluations.
- Work closely with other teachers to help students maintain satisfactory progress.
