Our dynamic and growing organization is seeking a Project Accountant to join our finance team and drive the financial success of our Construction Management division.
Position Overview:
The Project Accountant is a strategic, hands-on role to guide project-based accounting and construction financial performance. This role partners closely with the Construction Division to ensure accurate budget vs actual reporting, disciplined cost control, contract compliance, and profitable project outcomes. With a strong focus on forecasting, analytics, systems optimization, and process alignment and standardization, the position plays a critical role in driving sustainable growth, financial integrity, and informed decision-making across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial reporting of Construction Management division projects:
- Collaborate to align construction processes and accounting processes
- Ensure construction invoices are reviewed, coded and approved by project teams
- Maintain project audit processes to ensure project reporting is accurate and timely
- Project budget analysis:
- Support Project Managers with budget vs actual, contingency use and special reports and spreadsheet updates as requested
- Highlight and follow to resolution concerns on subcontractor invoices where quantity or prices are not aligned
- Collaborate with Project Managers to provide financial forecasts including cashflows of projects and commitments
- Construction project contract administration
- Ensure accounting practices are aligned with contract terms.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders to ensure contract terms such as payment policies and lien waivers are upheld.
- Oversee accounting practices for contract closeout, settlements and archiving.
- Support Accounts Payable and Construction Estimating with construction vendor administration such as W9’s, sales tax status and other needs.
- Project costing:
- Manage the overhead allocation process for construction projects.
- Maintain and support reconciliation of purchase, receipt and use of bulk purchase items such as aggregate, piping and building supplies
- Capture and report other discretional project direct costs
- Project billing:
- Oversee assembly and billing of all construction projects to include progress billing, cost plus and construction management services
- Ensure project revenue recognition is aligned with Work In Process True-Up / Over / Under billings
- Project financial closeouts, profitability and analytics:
- Analyze construction projects post completion to understand profitability, performance and long-term trends.
- Provide project portfolio analytics and scenario analysis such as bid win ratios, margin risk scenarios, change order cycle time, work-day ratios, disputed invoice resolution ratios.
- Provide system administration for assigned project software systems
- Develop SOP’s for internal and external users for assigned systems and processes
- Stay aware of new features and updates
- First line of support for internal and external users of assigned systems
- Manage relationship with vendors
- Manage configuration change requests and updates
Qualifications:
- Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience, ideally within the engineering, construction, or similar project-based industries.
- Strong experience in construction project-based accounting, budgeting, forecasting and analysis.
- Proven track record in collaborating with operations in a fast-paced customer-centric culture.
- Demonstrated understanding of GAAP and application to construction business.
- Aptitude for information technology support, optimization and use of AI.
- Skills:
- Exceptional collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in financial software and ERP systems (Sage 100 and ProCore).
- A strong aptitude for defining processes and developing automation using AI.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- In-depth understanding of construction industry financial operations, including contract administration, project budgeting and job cost accounting.
