Associate Consultant- Sustainability and Compliance Specialist

SES, Inc. is seeking a motivated individual, full-time, for this position at its Lenexa, Kansas headquarters. We are interested an individual who will thrive in an environment committed to learning and making a meaningful difference in the food and agriculture sector.

This candidate will support and work directly with the USDA, Agricultural Marketing Service National Organic Program (NOP) for complaint investigations. This candidate will also support the sustainability team on climate projects, life cycle assessment, planning, and various research projects focused on agriculture. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, organized, eager to learn from subject matter experts in sustainability, and able to think critically while conducting investigations of complaints received by the NOP. Education or experience in analytical areas such as agronomy, environmental and sustainability sciences, and/or experience in food production and handling practices preferred. This position requires you to live and work in the Kansas City area.

Duties:

• Conduct research and investigations of food companies, suppliers, handlers, and retail establishments to ensure compliance with the USDA NOP regulations (no travel required)
• Educate various companies and stakeholders on the USDA NOP regulations
• Enforce the USDA NOP regulations through communication with companies and stakeholders to gain compliance
• Organize and track case evidence in an efficient manner
• Communicate with companies and stakeholders as needed
• Apply interview skills to obtain information, clarify policies, and gain compliance actions
• Write final case reports/memos and notices for the USDA NOP
• Participate in sustainability, regulatory compliance, audits and/or assessments, and investigations with clients
• Record, evaluate, and interpret data and work plans, and provide analysis and interpretations of findings
• Conduct verification of sustainability and/or greenhouse gas emissions claims against client needs and/or industry and/or voluntary standards
• Review and develop strategies for reporting on measurable metrics as it applies to organizational needs and industry standards
• Conduct, organize, and track data reviews in an efficient manner for projects
• Support additional research and data analysis as needed

Qualifications:

• B.S. or M.S. degree in Agronomy, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Sustainability, or Food Science
• 1 year or more of experience with auditing and compliance preferred
• An understanding of environmental principles
• Ability to conduct data analysis using tools like Excel
• Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Collaborative mindset and positive, active participation with a “can-do attitude”
• Aptness to manage time independently with a commitment to quality and integrity
• Customer Service experience is a plus
• Intellectual curiosity
