Position Overview
The Portland–Deering Cooperative Field Hockey Team is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and student-centered Head Coach to lead our high school program. This cooperative team represents student-athletes from Portland High School, Deering High School, and Casco Bay High School and competes in Class A South.
The Head Coach will be responsible for building a competitive, inclusive, and development-focused program that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, skill development, and academic achievement.

The Head Coach will be responsible for building a competitive, inclusive, and development-focused program that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, skill development, and academic achievement.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and lead all practices, games, and team activities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive program philosophy aligned with both PHS/DHS athletic departments
- Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive team culture
- Provide skill development, tactical instruction, and conditioning programs
- Supervise and mentor assistant coaches and volunteers
- Ensure compliance with Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) rules and school district policies
- Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, school administrators, and athletic directors
- Coordinate scheduling, transportation, equipment, and game logistics
- Promote academic success and good citizenship among student-athletes
- Support offseason development and program growth
Required:
- Previous coaching experience (field hockey preferred)
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Commitment to educational-based athletics
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to meet all school district background check requirements
- Prior head coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level
- Experience working within a cooperative or multi-school program
