Position Summary
The Head Custodian primary function includes providing a welcoming, safe and clean environment that promotes the educational goals of the Sanford School Department. Provide leadership and training to the buildings custodial team. Assists with event setup, coordinates weekend events cleanup tasks and is available to respond to after hour building emergencies. Works with building administration to meet the custodial needs of the building.
Hours are Monday through Friday 7:05AM – 3:05PM.

Minimum Requirements
- Previous custodial experience preferred
- Previous leadership experience preferred
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Current Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or ability to obtain
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required
- Pass a criminal back ground check and pre-employment physical
- Ability to work alone and/or part of a team
- Ability to climb and work from a ladder
- Ability to respond to after hour building emergencies and perform weekend/holiday building checks
- Ability to perform snow removal using tractors, snowblowers and shovels
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the district (i.e. hours, locations, duties, etc.)
- Physical abilities - able to work on your feet for 7 hours a day and lift up to 50lbs
- Personal qualities - dependable, honest, enthusiastic, approachable
- Proficient use of computers, tablets, smartphone and facilities management software
- Professional qualities - detail-oriented, self-directed and able to communicate effectively
- Performs routine custodial duties; dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking supplies
- Performs deep cleaning duties; carpet cleaning, floor stripping and refinishing, furniture, walls, lights, and windows
- Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies
- Enters repair work requests into the districts work order system
- Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into dumpsters
- Assists with making adjustment to custodian work load, areas and tasks to ensure the building to the same standard
- Performs spot checks making sure custodians are meeting the standard of the district
- Performs routine security checks
- Tracks and orders custodial supplies, equipment and paper
- Reports building needs and concerns to facilities department
- Reports staffing concerns to the Director of Facilities
- Ensures workplace safety and environmental procedures are followed
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies
- Co-ordinate on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures
- Communicates information and expectations to custodians who are working after hours/weekend events
- Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
- Coordinates task associated with setting up, breaking down and cleaning up of building activities
- Coordinates and performs snow removal activities
- Performs lite maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
- Ability to understand and follow multi step verbal and written instructions
- Ability to lead the buildings custodial team to successes
- Ability to safely use district provided custodial equipment, chemicals and supplies
- Ability to use computers, tablets and smart phone
- Ability to use hand and power tools associated with custodial work
- Ability to work in low light areas
- Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions
- Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications
- Ability to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a two-way radio or telephone
- Ability to maintain composure & communicate effectively in stressful situations
- Ability to work on your feet for 7 hours a day
- Ability to reach repeatedly by extending hand(s) and/or arm(s) in any direction
- Ability to use equipment requiring high dexterity
- Ability to work in an area where dust, dirt, odors and germs are present
- Ability to adjust daily cleaning routine based on building activities or weather conditions
- Ability to work around moving machinery and/or vehicles
- Ability to work while exposed to a variety of different weather conditions
