The Server Assistant is the entry-level front-of-house position responsible for supporting the server team and ensuring a seamless dining experience for every guest. Server Assistants maintain the table, assist with marking, and anticipate guest needs — allowing servers to focus on hospitality, menu guidance, and order management.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Greet guests warmly upon seating and ensure they are comfortable and attended to
- Pour and maintain water service throughout the meal
- Mark guests for each course — placing the correct cutlery, plates, and accompaniments before food arrives
- Clear plates, glassware, and flatware promptly and efficiently between courses
- Reset and re-mark the table as courses progress
- Assist food runners and the expeditor by confirming table readiness before dishes are delivered
- Communicate with the server on table status, guest needs, and course pacing
- Bread, butter, and amuse service as directed by the server or manager
- Respond promptly to guest requests and relay anything beyond your scope to the server immediately
- Maintain cleanliness and order at the table and in the dining room throughout service
- Support service station setup and breakdown before and after each shift
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
- Full dining room table layout and seat numbering system
- Proper marking for each course and dish type on the current menu
- Table setting standards and silverware placement protocols
- Basic food and beverage knowledge — enough to answer simple guest questions and know when to defer to the server
- Allergen awareness — understand common allergens and always escalate guest concerns to the server immediately
- Sequence of service: when to mark, when to clear, and how to read the pace of a table
