What are the responsibilities and job description for the Billing Specialist position at Serenity Treatment Center of Louisiana?
About the role
Serenity is hiring an experienced In-House Billing Specialist to own the full revenue cycle for our substance use disorder treatment programs. You will manage claims across multiple Louisiana Medicaid managed care plans and commercial payors, keeping reimbursement accurate, timely, and compliant.
This is a full-time, on-site role. You will work closely with our clinical, intake, and leadership teams so that the care we provide is properly documented, authorized, and paid.
Key responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end billing for substance use disorder services, including detox, residential, IOP, PHP, and outpatient levels of care.
- Prepare and submit clean claims to multiple Louisiana Medicaid managed care organizations (Healthy Blue, Aetna Better Health, AmeriHealth Caritas, Humana Healthy Horizons, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan) and Magellan/CSoC as applicable.
- Bill commercial insurance plans, coordinating benefits and secondary claims.
- Verify eligibility and benefits, and track prior authorizations and concurrent reviews with utilization management.
- Apply correct CPT, HCPCS, revenue codes, modifiers, and ASAM level-of-care requirements.
- Post payments and ERAs, reconcile accounts, and work denials, rejections, and appeals to resolution.
- Monitor aging A/R and follow up on unpaid claims within timely filing limits.
- Stay current on Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Medicaid policy, the Behavioral Health Services Provider Manual, and payor bulletins.
- Audit documentation against billing to support compliance with Medicaid, HIPAA, and 42 CFR Part 2.
- Produce regular revenue cycle reports (collections, denial trends, days in A/R) for leadership.
- Maintain payor credentialing and enrollment records in coordination with administration.
Required qualifications
- 3 years of medical billing experience, with direct experience billing for a substance use disorder or behavioral health facility.
- Proven experience billing multiple Medicaid payors at the same time.
- Working knowledge of Louisiana Medicaid guidelines, LDH requirements, and the Louisiana MCO landscape.
- Experience billing commercial insurance plans, including authorizations, coordination of benefits, and appeals.
- Strong command of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10, UB-04, and CMS-1500 claim forms.
- Experience with an EHR/practice management system and clearinghouse ( Availity, Waystar, or similar, Alleva health).
- Solid understanding of HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality rules.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently and meet deadlines.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience owning or running a medical billing firm — we value someone who has built and managed a full revenue cycle operation.
- 5 years of billing experience in addiction treatment.
- Certification such as CPC, CPB, CBCS, or CRCR.
- Experience setting up billing workflows, payor contracts, and fee schedules for a new or growing facility.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field.
