Position Title
Custodian
Employment Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Jennine Tanks, Assistant Executive Director
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout Serenity C&C Inc.'s facilities and grounds. This position performs routine custodial, janitorial, and light maintenance duties to ensure that all buildings, offices, restrooms, common areas, and outdoor spaces are properly maintained. The Custodian also supports organizational operations by monitoring facility conditions, assisting with minor maintenance, and ensuring cleaning supplies and equipment are properly maintained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Custodian is responsible for performing, but is not limited to, the following duties:
Facility Cleaning and Sanitation
- Prepare facility spaces for the next business day by emptying trash, organizing furniture, and dusting surfaces.
- Sweep, mop, sanitize, and maintain all hard floor surfaces.
- Vacuum carpets and rugs; shampoo or steam clean carpets as needed.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, showers, mirrors, fixtures, and partitions.
- Restock restroom supplies including soap, toilet tissue, paper towels, and other disposable products.
- Dust furniture, walls, equipment, vents, and other surfaces.
- Clean windows, mirrors, glass surfaces, and partitions.
- Polish furniture, fixtures, and other interior surfaces.
- Ensure all assigned work areas remain clean, sanitary, and presentable.
Grounds and Exterior Maintenance
- Maintain the cleanliness of building entrances, sidewalks, and exterior areas.
- Remove litter, tree limbs, and other debris from company grounds.
- Water plants and perform basic landscaping maintenance as assigned.
- Assist with seasonal duties such as snow removal and ice treatment when necessary.
Facility Support and Maintenance
- Replace light bulbs and perform minor facility repairs as assigned.
- Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and building repair needs promptly to management.
- Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and other heavy items for office or program needs.
- Support facility setup and breakdown for meetings or special events.
Inventory and Equipment
- Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, and paper products.
- Notify management when supplies require replenishment.
- Properly operate and maintain cleaning equipment, including vacuums, floor machines, and other custodial equipment.
- Follow all manufacturer instructions and company procedures regarding cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Vehicle Support
- Assist with fueling company vehicles.
- Deliver and retrieve company vehicles for maintenance and repairs as directed.
- Safely operate company vehicles when required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform other custodial, janitorial, or facility-related duties as assigned.
- Support organizational operations by maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for individuals receiving services, staff, and visitors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Custodian must possess the ability to:
- Maintain the highest standards of honesty, integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Perform custodial duties independently with minimal supervision while consistently producing quality work.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.
- Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Safely operate cleaning equipment, power machinery, and company vehicles.
- Properly use cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintain attention to detail while completing assigned tasks.
- Identify and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or facility damage promptly.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other staff members.
- Work collaboratively while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy equipment, furniture, and supplies.
- Adapt to changing priorities and perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility maintenance experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles.
- Ability to pass all required background screenings in accordance with company policy and applicable regulations.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach frequently.
- Push and pull custodial equipment and carts.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Perform repetitive physical movements associated with custodial services.
Required Training
The Custodian must successfully complete and maintain certification or training in the following areas:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid
- Therapeutic Options of Virginia (TOVA) β Behavior Management
- Serenity C&C Inc. Policies and Procedures
- Human Rights
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Safety Training
Additional training may be required as determined by Serenity C&C Inc. or applicable regulatory agencies.
Conditions of Employment
As a condition of employment, employees of Serenity C&C Inc. are expected to:
- Become familiar with and comply with all applicable regulations of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and all Serenity C&C Inc. policies and procedures.
- Protect the health, safety, dignity, and rights of all individuals receiving services.
- Refrain from and actively prevent abuse, neglect, exploitation, or mistreatment of individuals receiving services.
- Immediately report any suspected or observed abuse, neglect, exploitation, or other reportable incidents in accordance with company policy and state regulations.
- Cooperate fully with investigations, audits, hearings, meetings, or regulatory reviews, including providing truthful statements or testimony when required.
- Maintain all required certifications and training.
- Successfully perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of Serenity C&C Inc.
