Position: Activity Specialist - Generation Q
Status: Part-Time
Location: Forest Hills, NY
 
Compensation: $20.00 per hour
 
Schedule: Part-time, Monday through Friday, from 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Are you passionate about working with young people and creating spaces where LGBTQ youth can feel seen, supported, and empowered?

 

Queens Community House is looking for an enthusiastic and creative Gen Q Activity Specialist to join our LGBTQ Youth Services team. In this role, you will serve as a positive role model while creating engaging, fun, and age-appropriate activities that encourage youth to learn, connect, express themselves, and build confidence.

 

The Activity Specialist will help create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every participant feels a sense of belonging. This position is ideal for someone who brings energy, creativity, strong communication skills, and a genuine commitment to supporting young people.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Plan and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate activities that provide a balanced combination of instruction, demonstration, practice, and hands-on implementation.
  • Create and implement effective lesson plans and curriculum aligned with program goals.
  • Support participants with homework and provide tools and encouragement to help them succeed academically.
  • Collaborate with after-school staff on program themes, special projects, activities, and events.
  • Assist with organizing and implementing special events, projects, and community activities.
  • Represent LGBTQ Youth Services and Gen Q at community outreach and engagement events.
  • Communicate regularly with the Assistant Director and Director regarding schedule or classroom modifications, behavioral concerns, and environmental issues.
  • Follow and reinforce program expectations, policies, and protocols to maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate appropriate, respectful communication with participants, families, teachers, staff, and community partners.
  • Create a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere that encourages learning, creativity, self-expression, and belonging.
  • Secure classrooms and program spaces at the end of each program day.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and complete required professional development.
  • Take direction and supervision from the Educational Specialist, Director, and Assistant Directors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Community Engagement

The Gen Q Activity Specialist will play an important role in representing LGBTQ Youth Services and Gen Q within the broader community. The position includes occasional weekend hours for outreach and engagement events.

Weekend hours will be included within the 24-hour weekly schedule, with mutually agreed-upon schedule modifications made as needed from week to week.

 

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Youth Development, Social Services, LGBTQ Studies, Human Services, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children, adolescents, or young adults in an after-school, youth development, educational, or community-based setting.
  • Experience planning and facilitating activities, workshops, or youth programming.
  • Strong understanding of positive youth development and age-appropriate engagement strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating inclusive, welcoming, and affirming spaces for LGBTQ youth.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with youth, families, school personnel, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Creative, energetic, patient, and adaptable approach to working with young people.
  • Ability to manage groups of youth while maintaining a safe, respectful, and structured environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take direction from supervisors.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to behavioral, safety, and environmental concerns.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
  • Availability to participate in occasional weekend community outreach events.
