What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Manager position at Semper Solaris?
We are a fast-growing California residential contractor specializing in solar installations alongside roofing, HVAC, and window services, operating across multiple regions and divisions. We’re looking for a dynamic Accounting Manager who moves fluidly between strategic thinking and technical execution — equally at home reviewing financials, developing a team member, configuring a NetSuite workflow, or piloting an AI automation. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role with a clear path to Controller for the right person.
What You’ll Own
- Lead and develop a team that includes an onshore staff accountant, AP and billing staff, and an offshore accounting team (manager, senior, and staff levels)
- Oversee core accounting operations: AP/AR, billing, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, and month-end close
- Manage job costing across multiple divisions, departments, and regions — ensuring revenue and expenses are accurately recorded and meaningful at every level
- Own intercompany transactions and reconciliations across entities
- Prepare, review, and present financial statements with the ability to quickly identify anomalies and incorrect entries without excessive manual digging
- Support cash flow forecasting and working capital management as the business scales
- Partner with external accounting firms on reviews and tax return preparation
- Drive continuous improvement in NetSuite and Salesforce — including configuration of fields, objects, and workflow logic to support an evolving business
- Build and maintain scalable Excel-based financial models, automated reporting tools, and dashboards that refresh cleanly for leadership presentations
- Identify, implement, and champion AI tools that improve the efficiency, accuracy, and insight of the accounting function
What We’re Looking For
TECHNICAL ACCOUNTING
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including meaningful time in a supervisory or management role with direct reports
- Demonstrated track record of managing, mentoring, and developing accounting staff — with examples of team members who have grown under your leadership
- Background in residential construction, contracting, or a multi-division trades business strongly preferred
- Strong job costing fundamentals — WIP schedules, project-level P&L, multi-region and multi-department expense allocation
- Experience with inventory accounting and various revenue recognition methods
- Experience with intercompany transactions and reconciliations across multiple entities
- Familiarity with S-corp tax structure, distributions, and owner compensation considerations
- Comfort with internal controls design and documentation appropriate for a scaling private company
- Ability to review financials holistically and surface incorrect entries through pattern recognition, not line-by-line auditing
- Experience working with external CPA firms on compilations, reviews, or tax returns
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA a plus
AI & SYSTEMS
- Hands-on NetSuite experience strongly preferred; experience with Salesforce or other CRM platforms is a plus
- Comfort configuring ERP and CRM systems — fields, objects, workflow logic, and integrations — to support business process changes
- Advanced Excel proficiency — nested IFs, dynamic named ranges, automated dashboards that refresh for presentations, and scalable financial model design
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI — not as a buzzword, but as a practical tool you’ve personally explored and put to work
- A track record of independently identifying, testing, and implementing AI tools or automations in a finance or accounting context
- Comfortable working alongside technical teams to scope and deploy AI or automation solutions, even without an engineering background

- Experience managing both onshore and offshore accounting teams across time zones

- Strong written and verbal communication skills — comfortable translating complex financial data into clear insights for operations, sales, and executive leadership
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, growth-stage environment where processes are still being built and priorities can shift
Nice to Have
- Experience with solar industry billing, rebates, or financing programs (PACE, HERO, etc.)
- Background supporting ERP or CRM implementation or upgrade projects
- Experience with lien waivers, subcontractor payment workflows, or contractor bonding requirements
- Exposure to M&A due diligence, entity structuring, or integration accounting
Compensation & Growth
- $120,000 – $150,000 base salary, commensurate with experience
