Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate ASL Mentor/Coach Provider to join our team in Fresno. This role involves supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently in their own homes or community-based settings. The ideal candidate will be committed to our mission of empowering marginalized communities and providing high-quality support services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized ASL training and support to individuals to improve formal ASL communication skills.
- Train and coach DSPs and family members in ASL while the individual is present to promote consistent communication and cultural understanding.
- Incorporate the use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices, ASL online resources, and ASL content to increase engagement in learning.
- Develop tailored strategies to reduce reliance on home signs and enhance formal ASL proficiency.
- Collaborate with the individual's care team to ensure services are integrated into their daily life and support plans.
- Maintain documentation of training sessions and progress, submitting reports as required.
- Uphold ethical standards and maintain professional boundaries at all times.
Qualifications:
- American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) or Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) with a score of Superior or 4 .
- Ability to hold fully shared conversations with in-depth elaboration on both social and work topics, demonstrating excellent receptive comprehension skills.
- Demonstrated use of a very broad ASL vocabulary, near-native-like production, fluency, and prosody.
- Excellent use of ASL grammatical features, including classifiers, non-manual markers, and spatial referencing.
- Experience working with individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind in educational, training, or coaching settings preferred.
- Strong interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills to effectively mentor individuals, staff, and family members.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is preferred.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in related fields is required.
