Segrera Associates is working with a fast growing datacenter organization. This organization is a growing data center platform supporting mission-critical infrastructure for enterprise and hyperscale customers. The operations span multiple jurisdictions and involve significant capital investment, complex procurement, and evolving tax regulations. They are building a strong in-house tax function to support continued growth and operational excellence.
The SALT Manager will be responsible for managing all state and local tax matters for the company, with a primary focus on sales and use tax, property tax, and state income. This role will serve as a key business partner to finance, procurement, legal, and operations teams, ensuring compliance while identifying opportunities for tax optimization related to data center operations, construction, and expansion.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical SALT expertise, experience in multi-state environments, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-growing, asset-intensive business.
Key Responsibilities
Sales & Use Tax
- Manage multi-state sales and use tax compliance, including filings, exemptions, and audits
- Analyze taxability of data center services, colocation arrangements, power usage, cloud-related services, and equipment leases
- Oversee exemption certificates related to manufacturing, data center incentives, resale, and utility exemptions
- Partner with procurement and AP to ensure proper tax treatment on high-value capital purchases and construction costs
Property & Other State Taxes
- Manage personal and real property tax compliance, including data center equipment, servers, networking assets, and infrastructure
- Coordinate property tax assessments, renditions, abatements, and appeals
- Support gross receipts, telecom-related, and other state/local taxes as applicable
State Income & Franchise Taxes
- Assist with state income and franchise tax filings, apportionment, and nexus analysis
- Support ASC 740 state tax provision calculations in coordination with corporate tax and accounting
Planning, Audits & Advisory
- Lead SALT audits and inquiries; manage relationships with state and local taxing authorities
- Identify and support data center-specific incentives, abatements, and credits at the state and local level
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes affecting data centers, digital infrastructure, and energy usage
- Support site selection and expansion projects with SALT impact analysis
Process Improvement & Systems
- Improve SALT processes, documentation, and internal controls
- Evaluate and manage third-party tax advisors and compliance providers
- Support tax technology initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA, JD, or MST preferred)
- 4 years of SALT experience in public accounting, industry, or a combination
- Strong sales & use tax experience in multi-state, asset-heavy environments
- Experience with data centers, technology infrastructure, energy, real estate, construction, or manufacturing strongly preferred
- Knowledge of state income/franchise tax concepts and nexus standards
- Proven ability to manage audits and interact with taxing authorities
- Strong communication skills and ability to partner cross-functionally
Salary : $100,000 - $120,000
