What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sawmill Manager position at Sebasticook Lumber?
Job Overview
Sebasticook Lumber is looking for a Mill Manager to take charge of our sawmill, shipping, and maintenance operations. This is a leadership job for someone who knows sawmill equipment and knows how to run a crew: set clear expectations, hold people to them, and follow through every day.
ABOUT SEBASTICOOK LUMBER
Sebasticook Lumber is the front end of our cedar operation. We take in tree-length logs, break them down into cants and boards, and ship them to our shingle and fence mill in Leeds sorted by length, grade, and size. We also four-side cedar butt logs, saw hardwood cants and boards, and saw hemlock for the Leeds operation.
THE ROLE
You will lead about 17 full-time employees across the sawmill, shipping, and maintenance. The log yard is run separately, so your focus is everything that happens once logs reach the mill: sawing quality product, getting it shipped, and keeping the mill running.
- Run daily sawmill production, including crew assignments, production targets, recovery, and product quality.
- Lead the crew and hold people accountable. Set expectations, coach, document performance, and deal with problems directly. You will have authority to hire, discipline, and terminate, with approval from Rich Mills.
- Know how every machine should run and recognize when it isn't. Work with the maintenance team to set priorities, reduce downtime, and stay on top of preventive maintenance.
- Oversee shipping so loads to Leeds are sorted correctly, counted accurately, and go out on schedule.
- Own safety on the floor. Enforce safe work practices, lockout/tagout, and PPE, make sure people are trained, and set the example.
- Use production reports to manage the mill. Track output, downtime, and recovery, and act on what the numbers show.
- Coordinate with Rich and the Leeds operation on production planning and priorities.
- Hire, train, and develop crew members so the mill has depth.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Sawmill experience is required. You need to understand how the equipment runs and how it should run.
- Experience leading people in a production setting, with a track record of holding a crew accountable.
- Basic computer skills: email, Excel, and Word.
- Dependable and hands-on. Leads by example and communicates clearly with the crew and with management.
Nice to have: cedar or softwood sawmill experience, lumber grading knowledge, mechanical or millwright background, and experience managing to production, recovery, and labor numbers.
SCHEDULE
The mill runs Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. as needed. This is a salaried position. We expect our Mill Manager on site when the mill is running and willing to put in the time the job requires.
