Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Side Sewer Permit Inspector who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment where no two inspections are the same. In this role, you will perform same-day, onsite inspections for repairs, alterations, and new construction ensuring compliance with stormwater and Seattle Municipal Codes. Working both independently and under the guidance of Area Lead Inspectors, you will apply your knowledge of civil and construction practices to support safe, compliant infrastructure across the City.
This position requires a strong foundation in civil and construction principles, including the methods, materials, and techniques used in inspection work, as well as the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and construction documents. Inspectors are expected to evaluate field conditions, communicate clearly with contractors and the public, and support timely project completion. Success in this role requires the ability to apply code requirements in real-world situations, adapt to changing conditions in the field, and continuously build technical knowledge and inspection expertise.

Experience: Requires two (2) years of civil engineering experience
AND
Education and Experience Equivalency: Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

The full salary range for this position is: $53.60 – $62.40per hour.

Inspection & Field Work
- Verify in the field that construction work aligns with approved plans, permits, and City standards, review records and as-built documents for accuracy.
- Prepare clear field reports documenting inspection findings, project status, any issues identified and required next steps for compliance or completion.
- Under supervisor guidance, issue “Stop Work” or “Emergency Orders” when serious permit violations are observed.
- Work in a fast-paced environment using phone and computer systems to contact contractors, schedule inspections, and plan daily routes efficiently.
- Coordinate with supervisors and team members to share inspection updates, ensure full coverage, and support consistent program implementation.
- Respond to questions from the public and internal teams about permitting processes and resolve complaints as needed.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with contractors, developers, and property owners to improve understanding of City requirements and reduce delays or rework.
- Enter data into secure databases and research project details using systems such as Accela, DSO maps, and other tools.
- Review plans and development proposals for impacts to utilities, transportation, and public infrastructure; recommend changes to ensure compliance with City policies.
- Collaborate with City departments and partner agencies (e.g., King County, Sound Transit, Port of Seattle) on projects that may impact infrastructure or environmentally critical areas.
Qualifications

Desired Qualifications
- Experience communicating with or working alongside contractors, developers, or the public, including resolving questions or concerns.
- Experience performing field inspections, construction oversight, or related work in civil, utility, or infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and practices, particularly related to underground utilities or side sewer systems.
- Experience working with GIS &/ or Asset Management Systems
- Experience working in a regulatory inspections program and issuing enforcement.
- Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
- May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- Overnight travel may be required.
- Valid Washington driver's license prior to commitment of employment due to driving a City of Seattle (COS) Vehicle to field sites.
