Position Description

Human Services, a department of the City of Seattle, funds and operates programs and services that meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable people in our community – families and individuals with low incomes, children, domestic violence and sexual assault victims, homeless people, seniors, and persons with disabilities. We invest in programs that help people gain independence and success.

As part of the General Ledger and Project Costing group, this position will report to the General Ledger Manager and is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations. In this role, you will provide directions and assistance to the operations, procedures and practices of the general accounting unit as well as Budget team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain working knowledge of professional accounting principles and practices in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and applicable Federal, State, and City laws.
  • Maintain Accounting records in the General Ledger and prepare month end reconciliations.
  • Grant management and accounting for All divisions.
  • Liaise between Budget managers and Accounting to resolve errors and discrepancies
  • Support management information and reporting requirements via the maintenance of current queries/reports, design of new queries and writing of ad-hoc queries as required.
  • Maintain and update policies and procedures pertaining to general ledger and project costing functions.
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation and responding to audit enquiries in a timely manner.
  • Oversee completion of month-end and year-end tasks per respective close calendars.
  • Provide guidance/cross training to accountants as required and provide guidance to other finance members.
  • Assist with SEFA/SESA reconciliations and annual reports.
  • Prepare Lead Schedules for year-end financial reporting.
  • Update and maintain customer contracts module in Peoplesoft.
  • Create, review, and approve journal entries as needed.
  • Perform accounting and financial research, analysis and reporting on financial, accounting and budget issues.
  • Assist Finance Analysts as needed with Grant reporting requirements to State and Federal agencies.
  • Perform other tasks of a comparable level as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field (requires satisfactory completion of at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter credit units in accounting with no substitution allowed)

Experience: Requires a minimum of three (3) years professional experience in general or governmental accounting.

OR a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft 9.2 Project Costing and General Ledger modules.
  • Experience with Peoplesoft 9.2 Financial Pivot Report.
  • Familiarity with grant management and accounting.
  • Familiarity with SESA/SEFA reporting.
  • Experience in year-end processes, schedules and reporting.
  • Experience in Creating, reviewing, and approving journal entries as needed.
  • Ability to identify accounting risks, errors or questionable practices.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • Assess critical information needs and ask the questions necessary to obtain the key elements needed to resolve an issue.
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to handle multiple priorities, taking pride in accuracy, quality and completeness of work.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • High level of customer service skills.
  • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience in Performing complex reconciliations.

The full salary range for this position is $48.07 - $55.96 per hour.
