Job Summary
We are building a pool of enthusiastic, reliable substitute teachers to support our K–8 school community. Substitutes play a vital role in maintaining continuity of learning when classroom teachers are absent. As a member of our substitute pool, you will be called upon on short notice to step into classrooms across grade levels, following lesson plans and fostering a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment.
We warmly welcome candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish, as this is a meaningful asset in serving our diverse student and family community — though it is not a requirement to apply.
Duties
- Follow lesson plans and instructional materials prepared by the classroom teacher
- Maintain a positive, orderly, and inclusive classroom environment for all students
- Take attendance and follow school procedures for reporting and supervision
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administration throughout the day
- Support students across all ability levels with patience and encouragement
- Adhere to school policies, routines, and safety protocols
- Provide a brief written or verbal summary to the teacher upon their return, as requested
- Serve students in grades K–8, adapting approach to meet the developmental needs of each grade level
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred
- Washington State Substitute Teaching Certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)
- Ability to pass a DCYF/school district background check
- Reliable, punctual, and able to respond to short-notice placement requests
- Strong communication and classroom management skills
- Genuine care for children and commitment to student success
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Child Development, or a related field
- Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish (oral communication)
- Prior classroom experience at the K–8 level
- Experience working in diverse, multicultural school settings
- Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices
A Note on Grade Levels
Our substitute pool supports a wide range of learners — from Kindergartners developing foundational literacy skills to 8th graders preparing for high school. We value substitutes who are comfortable and flexible across multiple grade bands. You are welcome to indicate your preferred grade levels during the application process, and we will do our best to match placements accordingly.
