Wilderness Adventures Associate Director

Position Overview

Scouting America’s High Adventure Base, Northern Tier, located in Ely, Minnesota, is seeking a Wilderness Adventures Associate Director to support the mission and vision of Scouting America and Northern Tier through the development and management of program, human resources, financial, marketing, and strategic operations.

Reporting to the Manager of Program Operations, the Wilderness Adventures Associate Director manages the daily activities of a major program, section, or special interest group. This position ensures programs and services are effectively planned, coordinated, and delivered to the assigned constituency.

Responsibilities

• Designs, delivers, and evaluates High Adventure program that meets the needs and interests of the base’s target populations and ensures their delivery in a safe and quality manner.
• Ensures all programs conform to Scouting America, NCAP, ACA and Northern Tier requirements for safety, risk management and related concerns.
• Oversees the daily operation of the assigned program including food service, program, business, and health care.
• Administers and supports major initiatives in support of quality programs.
• Advises the relevant task forces within the base committee regarding the program and opportunities for growth and delivery improvement.
• Actively prospects, recruits, and trains seasonal staff members for program participation.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Competencies

Knowledge of: Scouting America program principles, goals, and methods; child development and youth engagement strategies; safety protocols and best practices in youth programs.

Skill in: Planning, developing, and delivering engaging, educational, and exciting programs for youth; leadership and communication including public speaking and creative writing; problem-solving and conflict resolution; program assessment and improvement or enhancement.

Ability to: Motivate and mentor seasonal staff; manage multiple priorities and deadlines, adapt to changing program needs and priorities; ensure a positive and inclusive program environment for all participants; work independently and as part of a team; maintain physical fitness which may be necessary for certain program activities.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a camp setting, serving both in an administrative and a program role.
• Must pass a criminal history background check.

Physical Requirements:

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
• Hearing acuity for verbal communication, conversations, face-to-face interactions, and/or responses via telephone and telephone systems.
• Speaking ability for general communication and ability to clearly enunciate in conversations with others.
• Ability to move on unstable surfaces.

his role requires travel within an assigned territory and will include indoor and outdoor work in varying conditions. Standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

This position would require the ability to listen to others, observe other’s actions, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weight up to 50 pounds.

Licenses

• Must obtain Scouting America’s National Camp School Camp Director certification after hire.
