The Director of Activities plays a key role in creating and overseeing a vibrant therapeutic activities program for older adults in a specialized inpatient behavioral health setting. This position is ideal for a certified recreation therapy professional who is passionate about improving quality of life through individualized and group activities, while ensuring compliance with clinical and safety standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct patient assessments and periodic reassessments to evaluate functional, social, and emotional needs, while establishing therapeutic recreation goals.
- Design and implement comprehensive individualized care plans, updating them as needed and presenting goals at interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Supervise and oversee recreation therapy interventions delivered by support staff, ensuring continuity and progress of care.
- Plan, develop, and facilitate a variety of therapeutic, recreational, and social programs tailored to older adults, including those with dementia or sensory impairments.
- Lead both group and one-on-one activities that promote engagement, well-being, and recovery in a positive, supportive environment.
- Integrate community resources, volunteers, and contracted specialists (e.g., art, music, or movement therapy) into the activity program.
- Organize safe outings and special events, ensuring patient safety and preparedness for emergencies.
- Provide education on recreational therapy approaches to patients and families, while communicating effectively with interdisciplinary team members.
- Complete documentation thoroughly and on time in compliance with organizational standards.
- Maintain professional competency and adhere to departmental and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrate financial responsibility by working within budget considerations.
- Uphold safety policies, promptly report concerns, and model safe work practices.
- Support continuous improvement in patient-centered care and activity services.
- Respect and advocate for the rights and dignity of all participants, ensuring care is provided with compassion, confidentiality, and support for independence.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy or a related field such as Occupational Therapy, Art Therapy, or Music Therapy.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience providing and coordinating recreation or therapeutic services for individuals with mental health needs within the past 5 years.
- Preferred: recent full-time experience in a therapeutic activities program in an acute psychiatric or geriatric behavioral health setting within the last 3 years.
- Current certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) required.
- Equivalent credentials in Art Therapy, Music Therapy, or Occupational Therapy accepted.
