High School Social Studies Teacher

July 20, 2026


Job Summary:

Under the supervision and support of the junior/senior high school principal, the teacher would be working with secondary students to collaborate with colleagues and school personnel to achieve excellence in the area of Social Science at the Secondary level. This position will serve high school-aged students during the 2026-2027 school year.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of BS/BA degree and an endorsement from an accredited college program in Secondary Education.

  • Possess or be eligible for a valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Social Studies (RX) (preferred) or a combination of Economics (CA), History (CC), or Political Science (CA) endorsements.
  • Highly Qualified by NCLB Standards
  • Able to assess and document student progress
  • Professional in personal conduct and actions
  • Strong organizational, classroom management, collaboration and communication skills
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of technology
  • Active and continuous learner in the area of secondary education, research-based instructional strategies


Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in working with secondary school students in grades 7-12.
  • Familiarity and/or experience with Professional Learning Communities and leveraging classroom-level data to shape targeted instruction
  • Experience or desire to apply instructional strategies aligned with the Disciplinary Literacy practices for students in grades 6-12.
  • Ability to foster a learning environment prioritizing collaboration, critical thinking, and communication
  • Experience using technology as an instructional tool and for monitoring student progress
  • Knowledge in the use and application of G Suite and other Internet-based applications
  • Understanding, experience with, and/or willingness to adhere to Standards Based Grading (SBG) and assessing
  • Understanding of and experience with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and positive acknowledgements
  • Special consideration given to holders of multiple certifications outside of the social science content endorsement(s) and a demonstrated willingness to be positively involved in school culture beyond the classroom.

  • Creates and maintains effective environments for student learning
  • Demonstrated ability in the use, reflection of, and responsiveness to formative and summative assessment data
  • Creates assessments allowing students authentic ways to demonstrate competency in standards
  • Uses technology to promote learning, creativity, and collaboration
  • Seeks information about recent research, current best practices, and possesses a willingness to share information with colleagues
  • Collaborates with staff to plan, integrate, and enhance subject-specific standards in the classroom and across Department
  • Researches and attends trainings that further one's professional career and student success
  • Initiates new programs that support the district’s vision for high-quality teaching and learning
  • Ensures students demonstrate proficiency on explicit standards
  • Consistently implements agreed-upon programs consistent with essential job functions
  • Collects and analyzes data to evaluate and improve teaching practice
  • Creates, establishes, and maintains communication system between classroom and students’ parents/guardians
  • Builds positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents/guardians, and school community
  • Other duties as assigned by administration
