What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary School Counselor position at School Lane Charter School - Elementary/Middle?
New employees are expected to attend New Teacher Orientation on August 13th & 14th, and the week of staff professional development beginning August 17th. First day of school for students is August 24th.
The School Counselor is responsible for providing individual and group school counseling services and facilitation as needed. Provides classroom guidance and activities and consults and interfaces with parents, school staff, and community agencies. Responsible for coordinating and managing the school counseling program in collaboration with one other counselor, community resources, and referral services.
Essential Functions
- Organizes and administers an effective school counseling program
- Delivers social/emotional curriculum to students in need
- Assesses students/student behavior and situations and supports the development of effective behavioral plans that assist/facilitate the needed change
- Provides communication to parents and staff as required concerning the achievement of objectives, summary of activities, and other matters relating to school counseling
- Promotes mediation and the development of positive attitudes, practices, and conflict resolution skills
- Develops and implements activities to maintain essential components of: Diversity, Multiculturalism, problem solving, and a safe, encouraging and healing school culture and environment
- Works closely with staff responsible for academic development, social adjustment, and mental health of students in order to achieve educational and program goals
Position Requirements
- Bachelors’ degree in Education or related field; Masters’ degree in School Counseling
- Pennsylvania Certification in Elementary School Counselor K-6 or Elementary & Secondary School Counseling PK-12
- Ability to positively interact with students to encourage development
- Experience in alternative conflict resolution, facilitation and mediation/peer mediation
- Supportive, empathetic, nurturing and patient personality and excellent listening skills
- Strong researching, planning, and organizational skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and interact effectively with all students, staff, parents and community organizations
- Ability to follow detailed instructions
- Excellent dependability, reliability, attention to detail, and follow through
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment
- Experience with MS Office
