What are the responsibilities and job description for the Directional Drill Locator position at SCC, LLC?
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Ditch Witch horizontal directional drills to perform pilot bores, backreaming, and product pullback for fiber optic conduit/cable installation
- Use advanced locating/tracking systems (e.g., Subsite, Ditch Witch/Subsite electronics) to accurately track drill head location, depth, pitch, roll, and heading in real-time
- Communicate constantly with the drill operator to steer the bore path according to project plans, blueprints, and as-built requirements
- Perform pre-drill utility locates, potholing (vacuum or hand digging), and verification of existing underground utilities to prevent strikes
- Plan bore paths, set up entry/exit pits, and select appropriate tooling and drilling fluids based on soil conditions and project specifications
- Mix and manage drilling mud/fluids, monitor downhole conditions, and troubleshoot drilling issues (e.g., steering challenges, fluid returns)
- Complete daily equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and documentation including bore logs, as-builts, and safety checklists
- Assist with general site duties such as setup/cleanup, conduit splicing/prep, pulling fiber, restoration, and labor support when needed
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in horizontal directional drilling (HDD), preferably with Ditch Witch equipment (JT9, JT20, JT24, or similar models)
- Proven expertise in HDD locating/tracking systems (Subsite, Falcon, DigiTrak, or equivalent)
- Experience installing fiber optic cable/conduit in telecommunications or broadband projects (preferred)
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction, soil types, and bore path planning
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, bore profiles, and utility maps
- Valid driver’s license required; Class A CDL preferred (with clean driving record)
- Reliable transportation and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Physically capable of heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs), bending, standing for long periods, and manual labor
- High school diploma or GED; technical training/certifications in HDD or locating a plus
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with Ditch Witch Subsite locating electronics and guidance systems
- Knowledge of drilling fluids, tooling selection, and rock drilling techniques
- Experience with vacuum excavation, trenching support, and fiber handling/pulling
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced crew environment
