Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Field Surveyor - Instrument Man to join our dynamic surveying team. In this role, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining surveying instruments to collect precise data for land development, construction, and engineering projects. Your expertise in field surveying techniques, equipment operation, and data collection will directly contribute to the successful completion of projects that require accurate measurements and detailed land analysis. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work outdoors in diverse environments, utilizing cutting-edge technology to support infrastructure development and land management initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and calibrate surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, 3D scanners, LiDAR, and levels to perform construction layout surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and land boundary determinations.
  • Conduct utility locating using specialized equipment to identify underground utilities and prevent damage during construction activities.
  • Collect accurate field data using GPS surveying techniques, data collectors, and CAD software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, MicroStation, Carlson, and ArcGIS for drafting and analysis purposes.
  • Perform construction staking and layout surveys by interpreting schematics, legal descriptions, and construction plans to ensure project specifications are met precisely.
  • Utilize GIS tools and topographic survey methods to analyze terrain features and produce detailed maps or schematics for project planning.
  • Maintain detailed records of survey data, field notes, sketches, and reports while ensuring all documentation complies with industry standards.
  • Operate various surveying equipment including total stations, hand tools, Trimble GNSS systems, level instruments, and CAD software to gather high-quality data efficiently.
  • Assist with heavy lifting tasks related to equipment setup or fieldwork while adhering to safety protocols at all times.

Experience

  • Proven experience in land surveying or civil engineering projects involving construction layout surveys, topographic mapping, ALTA surveys, or boundary determination.
  • Strong knowledge of trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and math principles essential for precise measurements and calculations in the field.
  • Hands-on experience with GPS/GNSS systems (including Trimble), total stations (including Leica or Topcon), LiDAR technology, and 3D scanners.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, MicroStation or Carlson for drafting and data analysis purposes.
  • Familiarity with GIS applications like ArcGIS for spatial analysis and mapping tasks.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, legal land descriptions, construction plans, and schematics accurately.
  • Construction experience is highly preferred; familiarity with construction staking procedures is a plus.
  • Strong fieldwork skills including data collection techniques while maintaining safety standards; ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary.
