About The Position:
The GIS Technician is primarily responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining system models, maps, drawings, and facility information using GIS (Geospatial Information System) software (currently ArcMap/ArcFM) to ensure systems are accurate and up to date within the geographic areas of responsibility. The GIS Technician contributes to the development and improvement of the company’s GIS strategy and supports implementation across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain overhead and underground maps and system model diagrams
- Review and interpret field plats, operating notes, electronic files, and other construction-related data
- Verify, prepare, and maintain system facility and asset records
- Update landbase data (e.g., subdivisions, municipal annexations, roads) and resolve mapping errors (e.g., TLM, OAS, ADMS)
- Post as-built changes using GIS software following construction activities
- Perform switching operations related to system changes when directed by the control office
- Obtain field measurements and information to resolve mapping discrepancies
- Track mapping work through the project lifecycle and ensure accurate as-built updates
- Check mapping and drawings for quality, accuracy, and adherence to standards
- Create and maintain maps, drawings, and reports for internal customers (e.g., feeder, street lighting, real estate exhibits, QA inspections)
- Maintain and update the Transformer Load Management system
- Assist with process improvement, system maintenance procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Support software upgrades, mapping tools, tagging/numbering programs, and related projects
- Assist with training team members within the work group
- Serve as a point of contact for mapping and facility data across departments and external partners
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive company information
- Support efficient use of GIS tools across the organization
- Participate in emergency call-outs, including storm restoration and field assessment in challenging conditions
Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree in GIS, Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Technology, or related technical field
- 1 year of experience using ArcMap, AutoCAD, or similar CAD/GIS tools
- Experience interpreting or working with construction or engineering drawings
- Experience in utility design, construction, or distribution systems (preferred but commonly required in practice)
- Strong communication and decision-making skills
- Valid driver’s license (if required for business use)
- Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Outlook)
- Positive, team-oriented mindset and ability to work with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field
- Experience with ArcMap or ArcFM in a utility or enterprise GIS environment
- Familiarity with electric distribution systems and utility mapping workflows
- Exposure to process improvement or structured technical environments
- Experience working in collaborative, team-based technical settings
