What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Veterinarian position at Sauk County Humane Society?
This is a part-time position. The Shelter Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including spay/neuter, treatment of various medical conditions, and herd health maintenance. Assists the Lead Veterinarian in developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals in the shelter.
Participate in all aspects of healthcare for shelter animals, including evaluation, diagnosis, disease prevention, vaccinations, testing, treatments, and spay/neuter. Responsible for timely and proper treatment for sick or injured animals and recovery from acquired disease or injury. Provide veterinary care for injured or distressed animals, or those showing signs of significant illness. Ensure protocols for cleaning and disinfection are based on current knowledge and recommendations developed specifically for animal shelters and include specific methods and agents for achieving the goals of both cleaning and disinfection.
Perform spay/neuter surgeries for the shelter’s low cost spay/neuter clinic and assist in developing a program to expand low-cost veterinary services to the public.
3 years’ experience in shelter setting desired, or five to ten years of experience in an alternate veterinary setting. DEA license.
Schedule—Part-time including two weekends (or Saturday/Sunday split) per month. Must be a positive, energetic team player capable of thriving in a shelter environment. Strong work ethic and commitment to our mission to end pet overpopulation is paramount. Must possess a DVM/VMD degree and be licensed to practice in Wisconsin.
