POSITION TITLE:          Native Plants Worker

CLASSIFICATION:         Nonexempt

DEPARTMENT:               SAAE/Native Plants SUPERVISOR: Native Plants Manager

GRADE:                           NE1

 

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Native Plants Manager, ensures the effective operation of the nursery and garden center by planting, cultivating, harvesting, and transplanting trees, shrubs, and plants. Provides superior service greeting customers, answering questions, and selling plants and nursery stock items.

 

This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Performs seed stratification and preparation.

· Performs plant propagation tasks including but not limited to cutting, seeding and transplanting.

· Maintains records of propagation activities.

· Performs customer service including demonstrating knowledge of products available including plant names, plant identification and method of care.

· Prepares orders and performs sales and deliveries.

· Pulls, tags and loads plants for delivery.

· Waters, fertilizes and trims native plant stock to expedite optimal growth.

· Performs one gallon, five gallon and bare root up potting.

· Organizes seed stock within drawers and refrigerators and makes plant tags for proper identification.

· Digs, balls and burlaps trees for sale.

· Maintains upkeep of area including but not limited to weeding, litter control, organization of container racks and washing pots.

· Performs maintenance and preventive care of irrigation systems.

· Communicates regularly with Native Plant Management team regarding needs/concerns of Native Plant area.

· Updates seasonal availability lists and prices.

· Always provides excellent customer service.

· Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

· Performs other duties as required.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED plus one-year nursery work experience is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.

 

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:

· Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.

· Knowledge of retail sales.

· Knowledge of herbaceous and woody plant species endemic to New Mexico

· Skill in using heavy equipment including tractors.

· Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality.

· Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

· Ability to work with the public and provide excellent customer service.

· Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

· Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 

Work Environment:

Work is regularly performed both indoors in a nursery setting with a moderate noise level and outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur.
