Position Summary: Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, and related oral structures for children and teenagers. Examines patients to determine the nature of condition utilizing dental radiographs, dental instruments and other diagnostic procedures. Administers, directs, supervises, and coordinates all clinical aspects of the Dental Department; carries out its objectives in the provision of oral health care, education and outreach while participating in the community health program. Provides direction of dental services to pediatric dental residents and coordinates and works with the Dental Department Management Team. This is a supervisor for Program Attending (under SY Health employment) and Pediatric Dental Residents (under Sponsoring University employment). Essential Functions of the Job: Acts as a member of the Dental Management Team to foster cooperation, shared decision making and a team approach to problem solving. Responsible for Dental Department Policies, Protocols, and standards in accordance with accreditation requirements, professional and Organization standards. Advise the Dental Director of any situations that may adversely impact the efficiency of the Dental Department. Monitors departmental spending and revenue production to maximize efficiency in billing practices and minimize costs. Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, provides appropriate training, evaluates work performance, and makes recommendations for personnel actions in conjunction with Office Supervisor. Participates in Quality Improvement activities. Oversees clinical tracking, protocols to improve patient care and assure compliance with Governmental reporting requirements. Runs Morning Huddles and/or monthly staff meetings and Attending/Faculty meetings. Coordinates the preparation of reports and written documentation including budget reports, as required by the department, company, state and federal agencies. Acts as liaison among governing authority, administrative staff, dental staff, and other departments of the health center. Oversees designees who monitor equipment and supply needs and maintains up-to-date and appropriate supplies and equipment. Reviews and acts upon the reports of authorized inspecting agencies. Performs regular internal audits and quality assurance based upon departmental standard of care. Participates in health center and professional activities which define the delivery of dental health care services and assist in short-and-long-range planning of dental health services and facilities. Ensures that high quality care within the Dental Department is delivered in a caring patient centered manner within maximum efficiency while still being within the reasonable realm of standard of care. Reviews patient's health history and is fully aware of unusual health conditions, diagnoses, and treatment to follow to be entered into patients' charts. Consults with patients and advises them of their dental status, prescribes the treatment required, provides risks and alternatives and documents according to department, company, state, and federal agency guidelines. Also responsible for including the patient's financial responsibilities. Cleans, restores, extracts, and replaces teeth, using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical equipment. A foundation and application of minimally invasive dental techniques is also expected. Treats soft and hard tissues diseases of the oral cavity; performs surgery on oral tissues when necessary; renders prosthetic treatment when approved and indicated; designs and places orthodontic devices to correct minor malocclusion of teeth and renders any and all dental services to restore the oral health of the patient that are within the scope of practice. Oversees patient care by mentoring/proctoring residents in various clinical settings. As needed, will provide direct patient care. Provides preventive dental services to patients, such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth, and provides education in oral health and dental hygiene. Must have up-to-date knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of dental care. Must have up-to-date knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients/parents in correct usage. Able to work both independently and in a team environment. Able to handle multiple tasks and priorities. Residency Program Coordinator Functions: Reports to and meets with the Chief SYHealth Dental Director on a regular basis. Communicates with the Program Directors on a regular basis (directly/remotely). Full time employment with SYHealth and has a faculty appointment with the educational partners for the Pediatric Dental Residency Program. Attends SYHealth dental department meetings. Primarily responsible for the continuity and quality of patient care at the affiliated site. Implements CODA standards and overall program goals and objectives. Evaluates, inspects, and reviews all potential new SYHealth Pediatric Residency sites. Evaluates and reviews affiliated Pediatric sites on a regular basis. Develops, implements, and oversees the curriculum plan in conjunction with Sponsoring University curriculum coordinator. Administrates the Pediatric dental residency program, including future affiliated SY Health Pediatric Residency sites. Participates in resident recruitment activities. Chairs the interview committee and utilizes equity and inclusion in selecting a diverse group of interviewers who will participate in the interviews of prospective residents. Reviews recommendations from SYHealth staff interviewers and independently generates a final rank list of candidates and submits to Sponsoring University administration. Coordinates and occasionally attends/observes the weekly didactic sessions at the affiliated site. Formally evaluates the resident's progress on a semi-annual basis. Primarily responsible for the clinical experiences and evaluation of the residents while assigned to the affiliated site. Organizes and facilitates annual program orientation for faculty and residents. Provides orientation for new faculty attending. Formally evaluates the faculty at the affiliated site on an annual basis. Attends annual educational partners' faculty development workshops. Attends AAPD program director's meetings with the pediatric program director. Meets monthly with attending faculty to discuss the curriculum in their didactic sessions. Designates an individual to create the treatment plan and case presentation schedules for residents. Meets with program director, senior associate program director and coordinators to discuss/address issues related to the didactic curriculum and/or resident performance. Maintains program records relating to the educational program. Invites guest speakers to give lectures to residents about relevant topics. Coordinates and assigns literature review duties with faculty and approves schedule for review of literature with residents. Identifies and mentors suitable candidates for the chief resident positions. Facilitates relationships with other departments within the hospital. Approves/denies time off requests for residents. Responsible for overseeing the progress of residents' research activities, including regular updates from Residents. Efficiently coordinates administrative time to comply with duties. Designates an individual to create an emergency call schedule for residents. Counsels residents on issues of academic/clinical performance. Maintains and provides a record of all schedules, vacations, and attendance to clinical didactic activities. Assures residents and faculty adhere to the P&P of the program as stated in the pediatric manual outcomes and to the P&P of Children's Dental Center. Coordinates and involves residents in extramural and community activities per the school's mission statement. Other Responsibilities: Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Must maintain CEU's as required for license renewal. On occasion, the employee will travel and be able to provide her/his own transportation. Job Requirements Experience Required: 4 years practicing as a Pediatric Dentist. 2 years supervising staff and Dental Providers. Education Required: D.D.S. or D.M.D. Graduate from an accredited school of dentistry. Completion of Dental Pediatric Residency from an accredited program. Certifications and Licenses Required: Licensed to practice dentistry in the State of California. DEA License. BLS Certificate. PALS Certificate. Oral Conscious Sedation Certificate. Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job: Good communications skills with the public and employees. Good oral and written communication. Patience and understanding toward others. Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job: Public Health Education preferred. Equipment Used: Dental operatory, laboratory, sterilization and operating room equipment. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Mostly walking, standing and sitting position while bending to treat patient. May be required to work evenings and/or Saturdays, and attend meetings outside regular working hours. Occasional travel to schools or WIC sites. Will work with blood and blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training on a yearly basis. Universal Requirements: Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
