LEAD PHLEBOTOMIST

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position leads the Laboratory Phlebotomy Team, through a combination of the pre- and post-analytical areas of Laboratory testing. The Lead Phlebotomist oversees daily phlebotomy operations, ensures high-quality specimen collection, and provides leadership, training, and support to phlebotomy staff. This role maintains compliance with safety and laboratory standards, coordinates workflow, and ensures excellent patient care while maintaining efficient departmental operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (not all inclusive)

• Perform scheduling, task assignments, and performance feedback.
• Performs venipuncture, capillary draws, and other specimen collection procedures following established protocols.
• Ensures staff follow proper identification, labeling, and handling procedures.
• Troubleshoots difficult draws and assist with high-risk or complex patients.
• Conducts audits on specimen labeling, patient identification, and documentation accuracy.
• Ensures all equipment, supplies, and work areas meet quality standards.
• Provides ongoing training, coaching, and competency assessments for new and existing staff.
• Maintains supply inventory and coordinate ordering of phlebotomy materials.
• Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and lab supervisors to resolve issues and promote smooth operations.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Certification

• Current Phlebotomist certificate issued by the state of California, Department of Health Services.
• Current BLS.

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of phlebotomy experience in an acute care hospital setting.

Skills

• Excellent venipuncture and specimen handling skills.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to train and mentor staff effectively.
• Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Basic Computer Skills in Microsoft office.
