Job Description
Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting specimens from patients through various procedures, packaging specimens and samples for laboratory testing, and assisting with other lab procedures as needed. The role requires proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups, including pediatric blood collections and difficult draws in medical office buildings. A comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety is essential, along with the ability to communicate these standards effectively to other employees. The position also involves providing orientation and training for patient service technicians, working with pediatric patients under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Perform pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws, in a safe, accurate, and compassionate manner.
- Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital settings.
- Review test orders carefully to confirm accuracy, completeness, and appropriate specimen requirements.
- Draw and label samples according to laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Process specimens for laboratory testing, including proper packaging, handling, and routing to the appropriate laboratory areas.
- Assist with other laboratory procedures as needed, including basic processing tasks and support for lab testing workflows.
- Apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards in all phlebotomy and specimen-handling activities.
- Utilize laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar) to enter, track, and verify specimen and test information.
- Manage time efficiently to draw 20–30 patients per shift in an inpatient hospital setting, maintaining accuracy and patient comfort.
- Adapt to a float pool schedule by covering various shifts, units, and assignments as needed, including coverage for PTO and leaves.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- CPT 1 License
- Computer literacy with experience using a lab system such as Cerner
- Customer service skills
- Experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting
- Infant draw/neonatal experience
- Inpatient (hospital) setting experience, with the ability to draw 20-30 patients within a shift
Work Environment
The position is part of a registry pool, covering for PTO and other absences, and requires open availability, including overnight shifts (NOC). Training involves full-time hours to acclimate to the facility, with potential assistance in processing. The work environment involves working in a hospital setting, requiring adaptability to various shifts and patient needs, with a focus on compliance and safety.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Bernardino, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
