Compensation: $70,704.44 Annually

Job Purpose: Under minimal supervision, Manager, Residential Life is a full-time live-in position that is responsible for all aspects of the Ballet School’s Residential Life program, both School Year and Summer, including creating a well-rounded dormitory experience that enhances the students’ emotional, social, physical, and cultural lives. Responsible for student safety, wellbeing, and supervision, as they share in loco parentis responsibility for 50-65 adolescent boarding students, the Manager, Residential Life also oversees the Residential Life administrative team, and creates policies and procedures that serve the student body in alignment with the School’s artistic, community, and IDEA goals. The Manager, Residential Life is the primary contact for all day-to-day matters involving the students, dormitory, and partnership with San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

A one-bedroom, partially furnished apartment will be provided, including free utilities, access to coin operated/mobile payment laundry machines, and wireless internet capability. The School has a policy allowing for partners of live-in staff to cohabitate in our residence hall upon approval during the interview process. Meal plan and work shared cell phone are also provided.

Variable work schedule as required. Mandatory vacation weeks as assigned by School calendar and dorm occupancy.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

Residential Life Administration

  • Establishes, reviews, and revises dormitory policies, procedures, and emergency response protocol for both students and residential staff.
  • Maintains close contact with peers at Bowes Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Manages some facility systems in coordination with the SFCM Facilities Department and according to prescribed guidelines: room assignments, key issuance, etc.
  • Creates and oversees the preparation and implementation of relative to the dormitory operation, programs, personnel, and community living standards for residential students. Establishes and enforces dormitory policies and guidelines and maintains Bowes Center Handbook.
  • Attends ongoing food services meetings to stay up-to-date on the dining program, provide feedback, and advocate for student needs.
  • Maintain departmental student data tracking systems (discipline, curfew violations, overnight guest log and feedback surveys).
  • Oversee management of $15,000 in departmental programming funds. Track purchases, manage expense reports, and contribute to departmental budgeting.
  • In partnership with the SF Conservatory of Music (Bowes Center landlord), develops emergency protocols and crisis management systems.
  • Supports resident assistants in designing and implementing programs that will advance the goals of a diverse community which includes the development of student leadership and responsibility with a focus on high-quality, safe, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Coordinates the required class for Bowes students with SFCM faculty and staff.
  • Evaluates Bowes residents in Fall and Spring semesters as part of Student Evaluation grades.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises Residence Assistant, School Year Office Assistants, and Summer Resident Assistants.
  • Attends weekly School staff, monthly Education and Training, and all full staff meetings.

Summer Session

  • During the SF Ballet School’s Summer Session, oversees an expanded RA staff and 100 students, adapts and implement school year program policies and activities as appropriate, and coordinates supervision of students on excursions and day-trips.

Student Care and Oversight

  • Maintains a strong presence in the residence hall both during and beyond business hours. Builds relationships with students and staff that cultivate community development, safety, wellbeing and belonging.
  • Ensures cleaning protocols and appliance safety standards are upheld throughout school year and summer.
  • Manages day-to-day wellness for Bowes Center residents, including scheduled and urgent doctors’ visits and tracking of recovery time together with Manager, Student Services.
  • Is on-call for 4 nights per week; assigns Resident Assistant remaining 3 nights.
  • Establishes program expectations for staff with an emphasis on community development, leadership, diversity and inclusion, to promote students' educational, cultural, social and personal growth.
  • Facilitates conduct reviews – both major and minor infractions for students. Maintains detailed administrative records related to the care of students and supervision of staff.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with students and parents to effectively navigate needs around academic and behavioral performance plans in conjunction with SFBS expectations.
  • Serve as in loco parentis to ensure that residents are safe, nurtured and supported.
  • Serve as a mediator/facilitator when necessary to provide resolutions for interpersonal conflicts between students, including roommate conflicts
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, including on-call and overnight hours.

Education Level And Focus

  • A Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or a related field is preferred. 3-5 years total of professional experience with a minimum of 3 years residence life experience required.

Years And Type Of Related Experience Required

  • 3-5 years arts or school administration and previous youth development experience of working with adolescents in an educational setting. Having RA responsibilities in a residence home (college dorm or arts setting) preferred and experience in facilities management a plus. Related background or experience in the arts (preferred). Management, customer service related experience (preferred). Knowledge of ballet a plus. Safety and CPR certification. Satisfactory FBI and California DOJ background check is required.

  • Communicates expectations to staff and effectively delivers regular, specific and objective feedback. Provides challenging assignments to motivate and stretch employees.

  • Prioritizes work to effectively balance multiple assignments and demonstrate commitment to students, families and SFBA.
  • Demonstrates sound project management skills including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effectively delegates work to staff and volunteers, ensuring assignment reflect priorities and needs of the School.
  • Faces difficult situations with tenacity and sensitivity and supports students, faculty and staff.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with students, families, volunteers and community contacts by building rapport, listening and attending to their needs (when appropriate) and being easy to approach.
  • Enthusiastically participates in SFBA activities and events including embracing and assisting in projects and initiatives when assigned.
  • Maintains a positive attitude, takes pride in the School and supports the artistic vision of the Directors.
  • Supports and provides equal and fair treatment and opportunity for all.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to physical assist an injured student, which may include lifting the individual and supporting their weight with your shoulders or carrying the injured student. Must be able to ascend/descend stairs. Lift up to 30 lbs. for inventory needs; valid DL. Must meet the requirements of SFB’s driver policies.
