HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Construction and Maintenance Worker, Electrician, supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission and vision of saving species worldwide, by combining their trade technical expertise with high internal customer service, to take the best possible care of assigned facilities. This position installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems and equipment throughout the facility. This includes lighting, circuits, panels, motors, and controls. This position reports to C&M Lead, Supervisor or Manager.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, outlets, panels, and motors. Uses CMMS or equivalent system and monitors radio throughout the shift to respond to, record, and complete preventative and reactive maintenance work orders.
- Performs inspections and electrical diagnostics. Ensures compliance with NEC and follows SOPs. Partners with leadership on updates to improve safety, consistency, and efficiency.
- Collaborates with other trades and oversees external vendors to complete shared projects and urgent work, ensuring quality and site alignment.
- Coordinates with internal teams to minimize disruption and provide five-star customer service.
- Mentors and supports team members by sharing electrical expertise and helping others navigate internal systems, culture, and professional approach.
- Able to quickly respond and provide support to occasional after-hour emergencies.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
JOB EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of four (4) years of journey-level electrical experience required. Or
- Completion of a certified apprenticeship program required.
- Must have experience in commercial, industrial, or outdoor environments, including work with conduit, panels, and lighting systems.
- Experience performing work in occupied guest areas or sensitive settings (e.g., animal habitats, public pathways) preferred.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma required.
- Valid California Drivers License upon hire required.
- California State Electrician Certification upon hire required.
- Certification in arc flash safety or NFPA 70E training preferred.
- Low voltage certification preferred.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), circuits, wiring methods, and electrical controls.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, blueprints, and perform load calculations.
- Skilled in safe electrical work practices and troubleshooting, in compliance with California OSHA and workplace health and safety standards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across all building trades.
- Commitment to coaching others and ability to thrive in a diverse team environment.
- Ability to install and maintain electrical infrastructure in both permanent and temporary settings (e.g., events).
- Knowledge of generator systems, lighting controls, GFCI/AFCI protection, and emergency backup power.
