ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

  • Duration: This assignment is anticipated to last 6 months
  • Compensation and Benefits: $32.07 per hour including paid holidays and vacation/sick leave. Mid-level benefits are available (medical benefits only, no dental or vision)
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30PM.
  • Location: This position is 100% onsite in La Jolla

Description

The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Senior Hazardous Waste Field Technician works under supervision of the Operations Supervisor and performs such duties as collection of hazardous waste chemicals, radioactive materials, and biohazardous waste from university labs and facilities.

  • The incumbent supports hazardous materials/waste management including collection, segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers, and preparation of shipping documents and transportation.
  • Database activities include the maintenance of the Chemical Waste Tracking System with new regulations and processing changes.
  • This position will also provide coordination between resources and personnel to arrange special pick-ups in accordance with EH&S goals and Environmental Management Facility (EMF) operating procedures.
  • The Senior Hazardous Waste Field Technician also supports EH&S responses to hazardous spills and chemical emergencies and assists with hazardous materials clean-up.

Qualifications

  • Must possess HAZWOPER certification.
  • Graduation from high school.
  • Experience working with hazardous waste, or college coursework, including appropriate science courses and experience in an environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Knowledge of county, state and federal regulations concerning chemical, radioactive, and biological hazardous wastes and the applicable transportation requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic chemistry, radiation, and biohazardous principles; health and safety requirements; analytical techniques; ability to follow procedures and perform spill cleanings.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely drive and maneuver box trucks. Ability to move or lift large chemical drums, carboys, bottles, boxes, etc. using available carts, pallet jacks, or other devices. Ability to safely operate all equipment at the EMF, including trucks and lift gates, forklifts, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts, and other lifting aids.
  • Understanding of proper application and use of personal protection equipment including respirators, gloves, eye protection and protective clothing when in the presence of chemical, radiological, and biohazardous wastes and materials and the ability to monitor and train others.
  • Ability to complete basic functions on a computer terminal using Microsoft Office Applications, including data entry, database queries, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Reliable and dependable in performing job-related tasks, finishing assigned projects, and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrates competency and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Good oral communication skills necessary to effectively complete hazardous waste collection, management, and disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele using a professional and gracious manner in person, email, and on the telephone. Strong interpersonal skills to interact with all members of a diverse organization.
  • Understanding of customer-service and quality performance techniques and procedures and the ability to apply them in achieving quality and customer service goals.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • DOJ/FBI and DMV background check clearances are required prior to employment.
  • Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators, and respond to health and safety emergencies.
  • Employees must complete the OSHA respirator medical evaluation process and be medically cleared by a Physician or Other Licensed Health Care Professional before being fit-tested or required to wear a respirator.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Serve as EHS Response Team member. May be requested to respond back to campus to support the EHS Duty Officer in the event of an after-hours, weekend, or holiday incident involving hazardous materials.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,962 - $80,576 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.07 - $38.59

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
