Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner – Full-Time Outpatient

Position Summary

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric care in a full-time outpatient role at a Samuel U Rodgers Health Center located at 825 Euclid Avenue KC MO 64124. This is a full-time position that serves individuals with health and co-occurring mental health conditions through psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, medication management, brief therapeutic interventions, patient education, and care coordination. The role supports an integrated, team-based model of care designed to improve access, continuity, and outcomes for underserved and diverse patient populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive outpatient psychiatric evaluations, including history, mental status examination, risk assessment, diagnostic formulation, and treatment planning.
  • Diagnose and treat psychiatric and behavioral health conditions using evidence-based standards of care.
  • Prescribe, manage, and monitor psychotropic medications, including assessment of effectiveness, side effects, adherence, and safety.
  • Develop and update individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families when appropriate, and members of the care team.
  • Provide brief supportive counseling, psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, and relapse-prevention support within the outpatient scope of practice, when needed.
  • Assess suicide risk, self-harm risk, and safety concerns; develop safety plans and coordinate higher levels of care when clinically indicated.
  • Coordinate care with primary care providers, therapists, case managers, substance use treatment providers, pharmacists, community agencies, and external specialists.
  • Support integrated behavioral health workflows, including warm handoffs, curbside consultation, population health initiatives, and collaborative care activities.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests or screenings related to psychiatric treatment and medication monitoring.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in quality improvement, peer review, clinical meetings, and population health efforts that support access, equity, and measurable patient outcomes.
  • Follow all applicable federal, state, organizational, licensure, credentialing, privacy, and compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing, or Doctor of Nursing Practice, or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Missouri.
  • Current certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, such as PMHNP-BC.
  • Current prescriptive authority, including eligibility for controlled substance prescribing as required by state and federal law.
  • Current DEA registration, or ability to obtain prior to start date if required for the role.
  • Clinical experience assessing and treating psychiatric conditions in an outpatient, community health, primary care, or behavioral health setting.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology, DSM-based diagnosis, trauma-informed care, suicide risk assessment, and evidence-based treatment planning.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse patients, including individuals experiencing health disparities, social barriers, substance use concerns, and complex psychosocial needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center, qualified health center, community mental health center, or integrated primary care setting.
  • Experience with patients across the adult lifespan; experience with children, adolescents or adults may be preferred depending on clinic’s population.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills relevant to the patient population.
  • Experience using electronic health records, telehealth platforms, and measurement-based care tools.
  • Familiarity with collaborative care, integrated behavioral health, substance use treatment, and community resource coordination.

Work Schedule and Setting

  • Full-time position, typically scheduled during regular outpatient clinic hours.
  • Outpatient care only; no inpatient hospital coverage is required.
  • May include a combination of in-person and telehealth visits depending on organizational needs and patient access requirements.
  • Participates in team huddles, case consultation, and care coordination activities as part of the clinic’s integrated care model.
