What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solar Project Manager position at Samuel Knight Energy & Infrastructure?
Job Title: Project Manager – Utility Scale Solar Construction (EPC)
Location: Pennsylvania (Per Diem provided)
Travel: 50–75% across active project sites
Project Size: Utility Scale Solar (Approx. 30MW )
About the Opportunity
An established Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contractor delivering utility-scale renewable energy projects is seeking a hands-on Project Manager to oversee the successful execution of ground-mount solar projects across Pennsylvania and surrounding regions.
This position is ideally suited to a field-focused Project Manager who enjoys being close to construction activity rather than operating purely from behind a desk. The successful individual will take direct ownership of project execution, maintaining a visible site presence and proactively driving schedule, safety, subcontractor performance, quality, and commercial outcomes.
With typical projects in the circa 30MW range, this role requires someone comfortable balancing field leadership with project controls, ensuring milestones are achieved safely, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full lifecycle execution of utility-scale solar EPC projects from mobilization through commissioning and handover.
- Maintain a highly hands-on approach, spending significant time in the field working directly alongside site leadership teams, superintendents, subcontractors, and client representatives.
- Manage multiple active scopes including civil, mechanical, electrical, medium voltage, and commissioning activities.
- Drive project schedules and ensure milestones are achieved through proactive problem solving and direct site engagement.
- Monitor project budgets, cost tracking, forecasting, and change order management to maintain strong financial performance.
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure efficient execution and adherence to project plans.
- Lead construction meetings, progress reporting, schedule reviews, and risk mitigation planning.
- Ensure strict compliance with OSHA regulations, safety culture expectations, environmental requirements, and QA/QC standards.
- Review and manage RFIs, submittals, procurement schedules, and construction documentation.
- Develop strong working relationships with clients, inspectors, AHJs, utilities, and project stakeholders.
- Support commissioning activities and ensure successful project turnover.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 5 years of Project Management experience within utility-scale solar construction.
- Demonstrated experience delivering ground-mount solar projects in the 20MW–100MW range.
- Strong preference for candidates with EPC self-perform construction experience.
- Proven ability to take a direct, field-oriented approach to project execution rather than purely administrative oversight.
- Experience managing subcontractors, budgets, schedules, change orders, and project controls.
- Strong understanding of civil sitework, pile installation, tracker systems, electrical installation, and medium voltage scopes.
- Comfortable travelling extensively (50–75%) to project sites across Pennsylvania and neighboring states.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to drive accountability in the field.
- OSHA 30 preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related discipline preferred, though equivalent field experience will be considered.
Why Join?
This opportunity offers the chance to play a key role in the delivery of meaningful renewable energy infrastructure, working on high-profile utility-scale solar projects with an organization that values operational excellence, accountability, and hands-on leadership. Ideal for a Project Manager who thrives being on-site, solving problems in real time, and directly influencing project success.
