The Food Services Manager is responsible for food service preparation, planning, purchasing, and record keeping for meals provided to Elders in congregate setting or home delivery, and for the meals provided to the Head Start and Early Learning Center programs. Food is prepared five days a week on site and additional time is expected for managing inventory, documenting meal production, transporting Elders’ meals and support Head Start/ELC staff through regular nutritional activities and the implementation of family style meal service in the classrooms.

Principle Duties
  • Follows nutritionist-approved (Child and Adult Care Food Program) CACFP menus for children and Elders, five days a week with an emphasis on providing, fresh, local, and traditional foods as often as possible
  • Manages all food service staff personnel by:
    • Keeping staff informed of program policies and performance expectations through regular staff and individual supervisory meetings
    • Delegates responsibilities to program staff as necessary and appropriate
  • Provides specialized meals for participants with dietary restrictions; ensures documentation and confidential posting of children’s food allergies and physicians’ recommended substitutions
  • Completes meal preparation in a timely manner, determining amount of food each day to meet meal requirements, and performs necessary preparation for next day’s meals
  • Maintains food handler’s permit and additional food safety training, while ensuring all kitchen surfaces and equipment are cleaned and sanitized on a regular schedule and by applicable federal and state regulations
  • Produces timely, accurate, and clean records and purchase orders, as well as collects, records, and submits donations and payments to the Elders Program Manager
  • Inventories and orders food and supplies, following Samish Finance Policies, ensuring accuracy and freshness of deliveries and purchases
  • Plans and help implement elders’ and caregivers’ social activities for the Title VI program, including the yearly preparation of an Elders Luncheon with approximately 200 participants
  • Assists classroom staff with planning and implementing nutritional activities in the classroom, as well as nutrition education opportunities for families
  • Attends Title VI, CACFP, and other programmatic trainings, pre-service, and in-service trainings, and other continuing education
  • Trains and provides leadership to kitchen volunteers and works cooperatively with all staff members
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Must possess a GED or High School Diploma and the ability to accurately calculate serving portions, recipe measurements, and meal counts daily, as well as communicate effectively both written and verbally
  • Must have knowledge of basic child and adult nutritional needs, food storage techniques, proper sanitation techniques, and food preparation skills
  • Must have a minimum of six months experience preparing meals in an institutional setting, including responsibility for planning and purchasing
  • Able to carry forty pounds without difficulty, sit in a child-sized chair, move quickly from multiple positions and levels, and ride on a bus
  • Must obtain First Aid, and CPR certifications within 30 days of hire
  • Must have initial TB test, and be free from communicable disease
  • Must possess current Food Handlers Permit before employment
  • Must pass state, federal, and Department of Early Learning fingerprinting and background checks
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and insurance and be able to operate tribal vehicles to complete food and supply purchases and meal deliveries

**Obtaining full COVID-19 vaccination no later than 60 days from the hire date will be a condition of employment for all Samish employees**

Applicants must be a Washington State resident or willing to relocate to Washington State.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs; able to stand for long periods of time (70% of time), frequently stoop, squat, lift, kneel, bend, reach, and run (20% of time), and sit (10% of time); possess manual dexterity sufficient to use hand writing materials, computers, and office equipment as well as kitchen utensils and equipment with frequent repetitive motion, wash dishes; be physically able to move through grocery stores, classrooms, and the kitchen; be physically able to ride along and load/unload from a school bus; be physically able to operate a vehicle, enter and exit vehicle, and load/unload food transport containers. Mental/Visual Demands: Mental, visual, and audio supervision of kitchen and equipment is needed. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: mainly indoors with heat and some air conditioning. Must be able to move around for the majority of shift. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Possibility of exposure to blood and bodily fluids; possibility of exposure to communicable diseases; possibility of exposure to high temperature foods and equipment. Protective clothing or equipment may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, etc.)

This position is a “covered position” under the Tribe’s Indian Child and Family Violence Act Policy and all applicants must undergo a fingerprint background investigation in order to be hired for this position.
