Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Business Intelligence & Data Engineering to own our data platform and analytics end-to-end — the Databricks Enterprise Datawarehouse with curated data marts, a governed semantic layer and BI, and the engineering discipline behind the data-adjacent applications. This is a builder-first leadership role: you will set the technical direction for data, lead by example on quality and delivery, and grow a team that turns a data-and-analytics group into a stable engineering organization.

You will be the technical leader who guarantees data quality at the source — so that upstream disruptions never propagate. You will own a single source of truth for metrics through a modern semantic layer, and you will bring the requirements discipline, review, testing, environment parity, and cost governance that keep a healthcare data platform trustworthy and auditable.

This role is ideal for a data leader who has built and operated a lakehouse and BI stack inside a healthcare MSO or comparable value-based-care organization, has strong opinions on modeling and governance, and wants to build a high-leverage function from a strong foundation.

Key Responsibilities

Data Platform (EDW 2.0 / Databricks)

·            Own the Databricks medallion architecture (Bronze / Silver / Gold): pipeline reliability, Delta/Unity Catalog governance, lineage, and performance.

·            Keep the Gold layer trustworthy and observable — monitor freshness and alert on failure, not just success.

·            Set standards for ingestion from payer, claims, clinical, and Salesforce sources.

Semantic Layer & Business Intelligence

·            Own a modern, governed semantic / metrics layer (Cube or Looker) as the single source of truth for business metrics — consistent numbers across every consumer.

·            Own the reporting the business runs on: accurate, timely, and governed dashboards for leadership and operations.

Data Quality & Integrity

·            Put data-quality gates and controls in place so upstream disruptions (e.g., provider / organization data) don't propagate downstream.

·            Instrument freshness, completeness, and reconciliation checks; make failures loud and traceable.

Engineering Standards & Delivery

·            Establish requirements defined and frozen per sprint, PR review, tests that assert effect, trunk-based delivery, and dev / QA / prod parity — across pipelines and the apps built on top of them.

·            Operate the 2-week sprint cadence (JIRA, GitHub, Confluence); champion AI-assisted development (Claude Code, Cursor) as a daily team practice, kept under human review and tests.

Cost & Security Governance

·            Own per-workload cloud cost governance on Azure and Databricks: budgets, caps, owners, tagging, and right-sizing — so an ungoverned run can never surprise us again.

·            Enforce private networking, least-privilege access, and HIPAA-aligned controls (audit logging, encryption, access review) across the data estate.

Team Leadership & Roadmap

·            Lead and grow the data engineering and BI team, and direct the offshore full-stack engineer(s); build hiring pipelines and lead interview loops.

·            Partner with clinical, operations, and finance stakeholders; protect focus with a single, prioritized roadmap instead of many half-built efforts.

Required Qualifications

·            10 years in data engineering / business intelligence, with at least 3 years leading teams.

·            Fluent in Databricks / Spark — hands-on with the lakehouse, Delta, Unity Catalog, and SQL warehouses.

·            Fluent in a modern semantic-layer BI platform — Cube or Looker (LookML) — building governed, reusable metrics; PowerBI reporting a strong plus.

·            Strong SQL and dimensional semantic data modeling.

·            Healthcare industry experience is REQUIRED — you understand payer, claims, and clinical data and its sensitivity (HIPAA, HITECH, PHI, BAAs). MSO / IPA / ACO / value-based-care experience strongly preferred.

·            Proven delivery discipline — sprints, code review, testing, and CI/CD — for data and/or application teams.

·            Cloud data platforms (Azure preferred); data governance, lineage, and data-quality practice.

·            Excellent communication with executives and business users; you translate between the two.

Preferred Qualifications

·            Direct experience at a healthcare MSO, IPA, ACO, or value-based-care organization is strongly preferred.

·            Medicare Advantage specifics: HEDIS, HCC / risk adjustment, MMR, eligibility, and claims (X12 837/835/834/270/271).

·            dbt, Airflow / Astronomer, or comparable data-platform tooling.

·            Application-adjacent engineering (FastAPI / React, Azure Container Apps) to credibly govern the app teams.

·            Salesforce data pipelines; FinOps / cloud cost management.

·            Experience leading distributed or offshore teams across time zones. healthcare setting.
