Facilities Supervisor, Grounds

Job Summary

The Grounds Supervisor is a working supervisory role responsible for leading full-time, part-time, and seasonal grounds staff in maintaining safe, attractive, and functional outdoor spaces across multiple SLCC campuses.

This position supports the Grounds Manager in operational planning, personnel guidance, and daily oversight while actively participating in hands-on landscape and turf care, irrigation work, and the application of fertilizers and other treatments.

The supervisor helps ensure the college's exterior environment reflects high standards of appearance and safety, contributing directly to the overall experience of students, employees, and visitors. This role requires adaptability, including the ability to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, to urgent situations such as winter weather conditions and irrigation system issues outside of regular work hours, as well as working in a range of weather conditions throughout the year.

This position is considered an advanced groundskeeper or supervisory level position but will also be expected to perform all duties of groundskeeper positions as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead, train, and supervise groundskeepers and seasonal staff across assigned SLCC campus locations.
• Oversee task assignments, timekeeping approvals, and performance documentation; ensure completion to campus standards and timelines.
• Actively perform grounds maintenance duties alongside staff, including:
• Turf care
• Planting and transplanting
• Tree and shrub maintenance
• Weed control
• Irrigation troubleshooting and repair
• Athletic fields artificial turf care
• Application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides (as licensed)
• Assist with operational planning, scheduling, and project coordination for campus grounds.
• Inspect campus grounds regularly to identify issues related to safety, maintenance needs, and landscape quality.
• Participate in the college snow removal program, including responding to emergency winter weather situations outside regular hours.
• Operate, maintain, and ensure proper functioning of grounds and snow removal equipment.
• Maintain records, complete work orders within the College CMMS (Sprocket), and submit inventory or supply needs.
• Support event setups, campus functions, and other tasks in coordination with the Facilities department.
• Promote and model safe work practices; ensure compliance with SOS, chemical handling, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide excellent customer service and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
  
  

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Knowledge of horticulture, turf management, tree/shrub care, and plant identification.
• Knowledge of irrigation systems such as WeatherTrak, Maxicom, etc., including troubleshooting, repair, and controller operation.
• Skill in operating ground's equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and snow removal equipment.
• Ability to supervise, schedule, train, approve timecards and evaluate employees.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying and sometimes severe weather conditions.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions, diagrams, SOS sheets, and campus maps.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use work order systems (e.g., Sprocket or similar).
• Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse individuals.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs. and work from ladders as needed.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
  
  

Other Necessary Requirements

• Outdoor work in heat, cold, rain, snow, and other weather extremes.
• Regular schedule with the requirement to respond to emergencies as they arise.
• Call-back responsibilities for snow removal and irrigation issues, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Physical work including lifting, bending, digging, climbing, and operating machinery.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Utah driver's license; ability to obtain campus vehicle training certification.
• Must have or have the ability to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of start date.
• Herbicide and pesticide application licenses required within six (6) months.
• Must be available to work on call for snow removal and sprinkler system emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Zero (0) to Three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, landscape operations, or related fields.
• Experience working in a large or multi-site campus environment.
• Working knowledge of automated irrigation control systems.
• Utah Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain within timeframe set by the college.
• Groundskeeping or facilities management certifications (CGM, CFM, or similar).
• One (1) year of supervisory or lead experience preferred.
