DESCRIPTION:

 

Salisbury Christian School is seeking an Upper School Educational Support (Special Education) Teacher. A successful candidate must hold a bachelor's degree in special education, education, or a closely related field. Experience developing and implementing individualized learning plans, accommodations, and instructional strategies for students in grades 6-12 with diverse learning needs is preferred. Applicants should be prepared to articulate an active faith in Jesus Christ.

 

JOB PURPOSE:

The Educational Support Teacher is committed to the mission of Salisbury Christian School and to the students and families we serve. Working collaboratively with general education teachers and educational support staff, this role addresses the diverse academic and social needs of students through intervention, re-teaching, and individualized instructional accommodations and modifications, equipping each student to reach his or her God-given potential.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of subject area/s taught;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of developmental characteristics of age group(s) taught;
  • Effectively utilize the basic elements of instruction (i.e. presenting of information, questioning techniques, responding to learner input, arrangement of learning activities);
  • Demonstrate ability to inspire learning and cultivate relationships with students;
  • Use all available data including assessment results, academic grades, discipline referrals, and attendance data, to identify students in need and assist staff in providing individualized services;
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and student support services staff to provide responsive, targeted instruction within a multi-tiered system of support;
  • Provide intervention services to students through both in-classroom support and pull-out intervention, as needed;
  • Support students through academic coaching, executive functioning skill development, etc.;
  • Maintain accurate academic records, Student Learning Plans, testing data, and meeting documentation both digitally and in paper-file format, ensuring compliance and confidentiality;
  • Participate in regularly scheduled instructional meetings at the Lower and Upper School levels (grade-level team meetings, Department meetings, etc.);
  • Collaborate and consult with general education teachers, administrators, counselors, and parents when needed concerning students receiving direct and indirect support academically, socially, emotionally, and/or physically;
  • Participate in the SCS referral process in the identification of students with specific learning, social, and emotional needs and make recommendations about diagnostic evaluation possibilities;
  • Assist with the implementation of a modified curriculum for individual students when necessary, including creating modified assignments and assessments, and providing instruction as needed;
  • Participate in annual meetings with each students’ family to review the Student Learning Plan and make recommendations for the coming year;
  • Update all student and school records accurately and completely as required;
  • Model effective teacher/parental partnering through timely and proactive communication with parents;
  • Embrace and reflect the mission, vision, and foundational beliefs of SCS in all communications and conduct, representing the school professionally to its constituency and the general public;
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families, motivating students to accept God’s gift of salvation and helping them grow in their faith;
  • Demonstrate initiative, a strong work ethic, and consistent follow-through on all projects;
  • Keep the Administration informed of any known serious issues that may impact the school;
  • Address conflict with students, parents, staff, and Administration respectfully and privately, according to the Matthew 18 principle;
  • Know and follow all procedures for emergency situations, exercising sound judgement.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Supervise extracurricular activities, organizations, and outings as assigned;
  • Utilize educational opportunities and evaluation processes for professional growth;
  • Provide input and constructive recommendations for administrative and managerial functions in the school;
  • Support the broader program of the school by attending extracurricular activities when possible;
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Administration.

REQUIRED SPIRITUAL QUALITIES:

  • Have received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior;
  • Believe that the Bible is God’s Word and standard for faith and daily living;
  • Be in whole-hearted agreement with Salisbury Christian School’s Foundational documents;
  • Be a Christian role model in attitude, speech, and actions toward others including a commitment to God’s Biblical standards for sexual conduct (Luke 6:40);
  • Be a member in good standing at an evangelical church that has a Statement of Faith in agreement with the SCS Statement of Faith;
  • Show by example the importance of Scripture study and memorization, prayer, witnessing, and unity in the Body of Christ;
  • Recognize the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children's education and be prepared to serve and support them in that calling;
  • Have the Spiritual maturity, academic ability, and personal leadership qualities to “train up a child in the way he should go.”

  • Demonstrate genuine care for and interest in the students, families, and staff that make up the SCS community;
  • Model a lifestyle consistent with the school's Statement of Faith and Christian Code of Conduct, both on and off campus;
  • Pursue ongoing personal and professional growth in support of the school's mission;
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with fellow staff, approaching relationships with humility and a servant's heart.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience preferred.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education or a related area;
  • Master’s degree preferred;
  • Licensure by a state and/or regional accrediting agency preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands of the position are ones typically found in a school setting. The employee must have the ability to:
  • Sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • Frequently move about inside campus buildings and outside on the grounds;
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer;
  • Possess close vision, distance vision, and depth perception;
  • See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
  • Stand, reach, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl;
  • Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels;
  • Speak in audible tones so as to be understood clearly in normal classrooms.
