Position Summary

The Machine Shop Supervisor (Night Shift) is responsible for ensuring CNC machining meets schedule and technical specifications on the night shift. This is accomplished through assigning jobs based on the production plan and employee skill level, and ensuring material flows from one operation to the next with minimal waiting. The Production Supervisor is responsible to engage night shift machinists, clear roadblocks, troubleshoot difficult machining problems and provide guidance on CNC machine setup and operation. The Production Supervisor is also responsible for fostering and leading continuous improvement on the night shift, as well as developing the team through hiring, training and holding employees accountable to high productivity and quality standards. The night shift supervisor may, at times, run CNC machines directly to supplement production capacity or help cover employee absences.

Key Results Areas

  • Manage, lead, engage, hold accountable and develop department employees to ensure job satisfaction and growth.
  • Practice positive employee engagement methodologies and serve as a key communicator, trainer, motivator, and coach for the department.
  • Develop and manage direct reports including quarterly one-on-one meetings to coach, correct and recognize behaviors.
  • Conduct quarterly/annual performance reviews with staff and ensure all direct reports have a personal development plan for improvement.
  • Directly oversee all performance issues and progressive discipline practices.
  • Manage personal performance by setting and communicating clear goals and expectations.
  • Communicate the company’s goals and objectives to the staff and identify key metrics to ensure that the department is driving to the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Work with employees to cross-train to operate all machining equipment in order to ensure effective operation and to grow employees’ skillset.
  • Provide training and qualification for all department employees.
  • Monitor and ensure that the department operates effectively and meets the organizations goals and objectives.
  • Proactively coordinate team and individual work assignments to achieve daily goals and objectives to ensure schedule adherence and to optimize the overall efficiency and utilization of the shop.
  • Ensure that individual work outcomes are complete and accurate and meet standards set by Barber Nichols.
  • Develop and standardize processes that will enable employees to perform processes consistently.
  • Provide technical oversight and direction as required, to assist in troubleshooting or root cause analysis on difficult problems.
  • Manage cycle time and capacity throughout the department to ensure on time delivery.
  • Monitor Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) to ensure that the department is meeting its metrics and deliverables to ensure company strategy is met.
  • Monitor the production preparation process to ensure accuracy and completion.
  • Monitor production results to ensure quality parts are moved to assembly.
  • Proactively identify and overcome manufacturing constraints with equipment, processes, and staffing by developing alternative options, adjusting plans accordingly, and realigning.
  • Continually drive improvements in efficiency and accuracy in the department and measure improvements
  • Proactively analyze problems, determine root cause, and implement countermeasures.
  • Assist with Operational Excellence (OPEX) events to drive continual improvement and sustain implemented changes that enable meeting or exceeding customer needs
  • Collaborate with all departments to ensure that information and data transfers effectively to meet customer needs and organizational objectives.
  • Ensure pre-setups and setups are performed properly and promptly to minimize downtime. Continually work with manufacturing engineering on ways to reduce set-up times and increase productivity.
  • Communicate cross-functionally with other departments to discuss routing changes, machine malfunctions, labor times, and material problems; reporting material shortages and complications that interfere with the production schedule.
  • Assist with quoting and estimating machining work
  • Ensure safety of the employees and quality of the products throughout all processes.
  • Ensure that manufacturing personnel can locate Quality Management System procedure, have read and understand relevant procedure and are aware of all procedure changes when they occur.
  • Ensure that all manufacturing procedures are followed to drive quality outcomes and ensure quality controls.
  • Manage compliance to all safety procedure and ensure proper protective equipment usage to ensure personnel safety.
  • Drive safety and accident prevention into the culture.
  • Perform injury reviews and analysis.
  • Ensure all equipment is operational and preventative maintenance and calibrations are kept current
  • Continually improve procedures, processes and methods to effectively meet customer needs and organizational objectives. Provide improvement tools, techniques and training needed to implement and sustain continual improvement efforts.
  • Drive a continual improvement culture in the department and drive 5S and Safety initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises employees in the machining department; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, values, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; developing employees’ skills and encouraging growth; setting expectations and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; establishing positive employee relationships through fair, consistent, and respectful treatment of employees. Continually work to improve supervisory skills.

Requirements

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.

Education and Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent education certification.

Experience

  • Minimum five years of machine tool setup, programming, and operation experience in an ISO/AS/MIL STD prototype/job shop environment, utilizing complex documentation and verbal/written instruction.
  • Proficiency in utilization of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

Other

  • Must be willing to work overtime as required
  • Travel up to 10% of working time.

Desired Job Qualification

  • Completion of a two-year degree or certification in machining or equivalent from an accredited school, and/or vocational training.
  • Previous lead or people management experience desirable.

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is primarily required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend. Required to speak and communicate clearly with others. Will need to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Corrected vision to 20/20 or adequate and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Mental demands: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to read, write, analyze data and reports, exercise judgment, develop plans, procedures and goals, present information to others and work under pressure.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to high level of manufacturing and equipment noise. Duties are performed indoors in a manufacturing environment with temperature changes. Exposure to hazardous materials, fumes or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts with vibration.

Compensation And Benefits

The hourly range for this role is $40/hr. - $50/hr. This position pays a 15% differential rate over base and any time over 40 hours is paid at time and a half when employee moves to night shift. This range represent the anticipated minimum and maximum base bonus for this position based upon a good faith and reasonable estimate. The final compensation for this position will be set based on the applicant’s qualifications (education, training and/or experience related to this role), and therefore, may fall outside the range shown, depending on the circumstances.
