What are the responsibilities and job description for the Young Adult Programming Assistant/Reference Assistant position at Salem Public Library?
This position helps plan, promote, and run our library programs for tweens and teens, while providing high-quality reference and information assistance to patrons of all ages. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with middle and high school students, is well-organized, dependable, and wants to support our community's literacy goals. In this position, you will work closely with other staff members to host library events, guide patrons in utilizing library resources, and create a welcoming environment for young patrons and their families.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, library science, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience working directly with tweens or teenagers in a structured environment (e.g., libraries, schools, churches, camps, or community centers).
- Demonstrated ability to provide basic reference support, including assisting patrons with research inquiries, navigating the library catalog, and locating digital or physical resources.
- Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills; ability to engage confidently and enthusiastically with diverse audiences of youth, parents, and general library patrons.
- This position requires a flexible schedule, including regular evening hours and a rotating weekend shift, to accommodate after-school programming and weekend family events.
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
