- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the principal.
- Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the school district.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, student code of conduct, and IEP.
- Create classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

The students served at the Oshawa Learning Academy are residential clients at the Leo A. Hoffmann Center (LAHC). LAHC is a private, nonprofit corporation committed to assessing and providing high quality, outcome-based mental health services for children and adolescents. Under the direction of the school principal, the Elementary Education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. This position involves significant collaboration with a special education teacher, as many students in this setting have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher is responsible for creating a structured learning environment that supports student growth toward grade-level standards and provides access to the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible through supplemental aids, accommodations, modifications, and other necessary supports.
