Parish Cantor

St. John Paul the Great Parish seeks a faith-filled and skilled Cantor to lead and encourage the sung prayer of the assembly during liturgical celebrations. The Cantor serves as a liturgical minister whose primary role is to proclaim the Responsorial Psalm, lead congregational singing, and assist the parish in fostering reverent, prayerful, and active participation in the Church’s worship. The parish worships at both St. Francis Church and St. Peter Church and celebrates multiple weekend and special liturgies throughout the year.

• Strong singing voice with good vocal technique and clear diction.
• Ability to lead congregational singing confidently and prayerfully.
• Ability to read music and learn new repertoire efficiently.
• Familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy and liturgical music traditions.
• Practicing Catholic preferred, or a candidate who demonstrates respect for and commitment to the teachings and worship practices of the Catholic Church.
• Reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and conduct.
• Previous cantor or choral experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods during liturgical celebrations.
• Ability to project voice effectively in a worship setting.

The Cantor serves under the direction and supervision of the Parish Music Director and collaborates with the Music Director in the preparation and execution of the parish's music ministry. This position is a ministerial role that supports the overall music program and does not include responsibility for directing or administering the parish music ministry.

Essential Responsibilities

Liturgical Leadership

• Serve as Cantor for assigned weekend, holy day, funeral, wedding, and other special liturgies.
• Lead the assembly confidently in hymns, acclamations, and other musical responses.
• Proclaim the Responsorial Psalm when assigned.
• Assist in maintaining a worship environment that is prayerful, reverent, and welcoming.
• Collaborate with clergy, the Music Director, musicians, and other liturgical ministers to ensure the smooth flow of worship.
• Carry out assigned responsibilities under the guidance of the Music Director and follow established liturgical and musical plans for each celebration.
  • Demonstrate understanding that music ministry is both a professional responsibility and a form of ecclesial service.
  • Support the parish's mission and Roman Catholic identity.
    

    Music Preparation

    • Prepare assigned music in advance of liturgies.
    • Attend rehearsals as scheduled.
    • Learn new liturgical music as needed.
    • Follow liturgical and musical directives established by the Music Director, parish, and Archdiocese.
