ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR --- St. John Paul II Catholic Academy
Guidance Counselor reports to the Campus Principal with support of the Guidance Director
Counselor is hired for each campus to be a support and assistance to the School Community – Principal, teachers, students and parents. She/he should be accessible to the school Community . Confidentiality is key (although Principal should know the “pulse” of the school)
SPECIFICS FOR EACH CAMPUS
•City Connects Program with Boston College
•Counselor in Campus
•Support for Faculty, Students, Parents, Principal
•Fulfill duties assigned by Principal
Exam School and High School Application Process
•Coordinate the distribution of information to parents and students
•Gather all application items and fill out transcript information and grades
•Helps students register for HSPT, EXAM and any other needs
•Helps families with forms such as but not limited to
o Application
o Essay
o Financial Aid
o Family documentation
City Connect Program:
City Connects assesses the strengths and needs of each student in the school and connects students with a tailored set of supports and resources from inside and outside the school. The responsibilities of the City Connects Coordinator are to:
•Establish and lead a Student Support team and process in the school that identifies and responds to the strengths and personal developmental needs of each and every child in the school.
• Connect students to a range of prevention, early intervention and intensive services programs that address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development of each student.
•Develop and enhance community partnerships with varied community agencies to meet the identified needs of students, families, and the school.
•Collaborate with school staff, including classroom teachers, to implement the City Connects model.
•Promote the City Connects model of student support to the school community, families and community agencies.
•Engage families and caregivers in understanding and supporting the education of their children and the ways in which academic outcomes are enhanced by serving the social / emotional and personal development needs of the child.
•Collect data on the implementation of the model and the delivery of services
Crisis Counselor at Campus
•Assists teachers/ principal in crisis situations within the campus
•Make Referrals
•Coordinate counseling for students and families
o Individual counseling of student (short term)
- Long Term Counseling - REFER to Outside COUNSELING AGENCY -- e.g. HOME FOR LITTLE WANDERERS, Walker, Franciscan
•Group counseling of class students involved in problematic situation in the classroom
-Follow up to teacher for support and suggestions for accommodating the student in distress
o (In most of these situations, Principal is active in process.)
•Lunch Bunch groups
Research and Implement Guidance/Social Emotional Programs
•With approval of Principal or Guidance Director
SUPPORT TO TEACHERS/PRINCIPAL/STAFF
- Counselor should be in contact with teachers to ascertain any situations that may need assistance.
- Most campuses, Counselor is on duty during some Lunchtime or other duty that has her/him the opportunity to view students to encompass situations that may need assistance.
- Counselor keeps Principal informed of situations regarding Academy community.
FULFILL DUTIES OF THE PRINCIPAL - each Principal determines at their campus.
Required:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling or Social Work
- Licensed School Counselor, Licensed Pupil Adjustment Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LCSW / LICSW)
- Experience working in a school environment
- Evidence of culturally competent practices
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff, a diverse student body and families, as well as a team of professionals at both the school and the university
Preferred:
- Experience in urban schools
- Fluency in a second language
- Experience with an organization that uses data to guide practice
