Responsibilities
- The Student Extern functions as a support member of the patient care team, providing direct care under the supervision of an RN and based on skills successfully completed in their nursing program. All newly hired externs begin in a nursing assistant role, with progression to their appropriate skill level upon clearance by the Supervisor.
- Assist with obtaining and recording vital signs, performing EKGs and glucose checks, collecting specimens, and supporting basic patient care tasks throughout the emergency department
- Support registered nurses during triage, trauma activations, and code situations by preparing equipment, monitoring patients, and ensuring efficient workflow under direct supervision
- Observe and gain exposure to a wide range of emergency procedures including IV insertions, catheterizations, wound care, and critical care interventions alongside experienced ER registered nurses
- Provide compassionate patient interaction by responding to call lights, assisting with hygiene, mobility, feeding, and offering emotional support to patients and their families
- Contribute to accurate clinical documentation by recording vital signs, intake and output, and care activities in the electronic medical record according to hospital policy and supervision guidelines
Education and Work Experience
- Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program.
- Must be in good and academic standing.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification.
- Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
